By David Leyonhjelm, published 12/3/2026

The Liberals changed the Senate voting system to help themselves. Instead, they helped the Greens.

Too many unaligned idiots and people with weirdo policies are permitted to nominate for the Senate. People have to wade through too many of them on the tablecloth sized ballot paper, encouraging them to vote across the top in the way parties tell them to. Or, the smart ones vote 12 below the line - too hard for your average voter, who listens to tripe about preferences by the parties and the media, making them think that individuals can't make their own decision on preferences. Duh!

The Australian compulsory voting, compulsory preferential system is an undemocratic and abominable one, favouring the uniparty. How much longer before we are like other authoritarian countries where the ruling party gets “99%”of the vote.
