By Binoy Kampmark, published 17/2/2026

Were we all crazy to rely on demographic information from a book compiled by a spy agency?

I was quite a fan of the World Factbook. It was a readily accessible compendium of lots of data and mostly pretty reliable. I used it a bit like Wikipedia – a useful starting point researching an issue I knew not much about, but not to be taken at face value or as the sole reliable source of information. It’s especially disappointing that they have removed the historical data, as well as ceasing to update it. That could have given researchers pointers to sources of information even if the archived material was out of date.

Yep, there was a time when the World Factbook was the starting point for any research into new areas. It was always true that it was a CIA production and therefore buyer beware. But beggars can't be choosers and when there was a dearth of similar data sources, the World Factbook was a godsend.

I don't care that its ceased to be produced since I haven't used it in years. But its a shame bordering on criminal vandalism to delete all the old data. Why? Inquiring minds have their suspicions.

Was It Deleted?

No — The World Factbook was not deleted. It is still publicly available on the CIA’s official website.

However, there are a few reasons people sometimes think it was removed:

1. Website Redesign / URL Changes

The CIA occasionally updates or redesigns its website. When this happens, old links can break, which may make it appear as though the Factbook was removed.

2. Regional Access Restrictions

In some countries, access to certain U.S. government websites may be limited or blocked.

3. Platform Removal (e.g., Wikis or Mirrors)

Some unofficial copies or mirrored versions of the Factbook (for example, on third-party sites) may have been taken down, leading to confusion.

4. Printed Edition Changes

The CIA stopped printing physical copies for public sale for a period and shifted primarily to digital access
