In 1916 the war was going badly for the British. The cordite made from acetone was faulty causing ordnance to misfire. The British turned to an industrial chemist who created an acetone from horse chestnuts. The resulting acetone-cordite was both plentiful and efficient, resulting in Britain winning WW1.

The industrial chemist to whom Britain acknowledged and demonstrated great gratitude was the Jew Chaim Weizmann.
