The bullshit detector's survival guide : Comments

By Steven Schwartz, published 25/9/2025

In a world of waffle and weasel words, plain speaking is a small act of rebellion. Here are seven ways to recognise bullshit, challenge it, and, if necessary, laugh it off the stage.

The biggest BS that too many people's detectors are not picking up are climate hysteria and Net Zero.

It is perhaps interesting to note that I attempted to post a comment in which I used the word the first half of which is bull----.
It was disallowed for being to profane.
Never mind that the title of the authors essay featured the same word.

Another clever and entertaining piece from Steven.

I suspect one of the reasons that BS is so universal is confirmation bias - we tend to accept specious or vague arguments and assertions when they seem to support ideas we already agree with. Think of the many nonsensical arguments on both sides of the Voice debate that went largely unchallenged.

So maybe we should add another step to Steven's list - am I ignoring the evidence that this proposition is BS because I want it to be true?

ttbn,

If we’re talking about "BS detectors," then climate denial is Exhibit A.

Net Zero and climate action aren’t "hysteria," they’re the consensus of every national academy of science on the planet, backed by data collected over decades. The "hysteria" line is a classic example of what Schwartz is describing, dismissive bluster standing in for substance.

If your detector isn’t picking up the fact that the strongest scientific institutions in the world, from the CSIRO to the Royal Society, all land on the same conclusion about human-driven climate change, then maybe it needs recalibrating.
