Russia faces a serious dilemma.
Continue the war in Ukraine and lose Syria, or defend Syria and lose momentum in Ukraine prior to Trumps inauguration.

Just goes to show the truth behind the old axiom; things are bad but they could be worse.

Sometimes things move quickly. As compared to the glacial movement of forces on the Russian steppes, Syria's situation changes hourly.

It now seems that:

The rebels are in the suburbs of Damascus.

The southern rebel group(s) have overrun much of southern Syria,

No one knows where Assad is. If he doesn't want to suffer the Ghaddafi fate, he'll probably already be in Moscow or Tehran.

Iran is seems is bugging out. Even though we were assured that they totally defeated the Israeli airforce (gaffaw!!) it seems a small rebel force is beyond their abilities. Of course, its also possible that they were so badly bloodied by the IDF that they've got nothing left to give.

Most of the Russian fleet has left Tartus. They can't go through the Dardanelles to the Black Sea so they probably head to the Krasnogorsk.
The Russian airforce, while apparently killing large numbers of civilians trying to stop the rebels, has been totally ineffectual. (I'm sure the UN will get around to condemning the civilian deaths any time soon - or does that only happen when Israel is involved?)

Trump has said the US should stay right out of the whole sorry mess. Quite the warmonger, eh?

The US trip-wire force will remain to protect the Kurds who are probably closer to statehood than any time in a century.

Things can hardly be going any better for Israel. Hezbullah defeated. Iran on the run. Russia bugging out. Iran's supply-lines to Hezbullah and Hamas totally severed. To be sure, the new rulers of Syria, whoever they may be, will remain hostile to the Jews but will spend a decade of infighting while they jockey for positions. And while they'll be hostile to the Jews they'll be even more hostile to Hezbullah and Iran who enabled Assad to massacre their kin.

Trump hasn't even taken over yet and already the world is falling into place.

Its now confirmed that Assad has left. Where to? No one seems to know but Moscow seems to be the majority view.

Hezbullah are trying to get their forces back into Lebanon so that they can avoid suffering the tender mercies of the rebels who have plenty of reason to seek revenge. Reports are that Israel is taking the opportunity to take out the Hezbullah convoys before they can re-unite with their fellow terrorists in Lebanon.

None of ANY OF THIS, is in line with our claimed Western values.
If pointing it out makes me the bad person, what does it say about us?

Our nations have been completely corrupted and we're an affront to the values we claim to support.

So Damascus has fallen and the Assad regime is no more. Assad is apparently in Moscow as a 'guest' of Putin. Its probably in Assad's interest to stay away from open windows.

In the meantime, Hezbullah's forces which are in Syria to defend the Assad regime are now trying to get back to Lebanon while avoiding both the Israeli's and the rebel, each of whom have legitimate reasons to deal out a little FAFO to Iran's henchmen.

And of course, Iran is also trying to get their people out. Interesting that they are doing it by land rather than air, showing that Israel now has complete air supremacy in the region.

And Russia is leaving with its tail between its legs. It is suggested that there are a large number of Russians in Syria now trapped by the rebels and abandoned by the rapid departure of the Russian navy. Perhaps the rebels will use the Russians as hostages so they can get their hands on Assad.

And finally Israel has taken the opportunity to take out the Syrian chemical warfare factories and to strengthen their grip on the Golan Heights. The significance of that is that it now provides them complete surveillance capabilities over southern Lebanon and Hazbullah's bases.

Things can hardly be going better for Israel. The Iranian strategy of surrounding Israel with its proxies is in tatters. Hamas all but wiped out. Hezbullah as well. Houthi's suitably cowed. Now Syria gone and Iran's ability to supply Hezbullah and Hamas. And Iran's air defences neutered.

Next step - Iran's nuclear facilities.

I think most were caught by surprise. Russia most of all. They barely got their navy out and it seems they've left a sizable number of troops and advisors behind. What's most surprising there is that they were in the middle of it so how they got caught flatfooted indicates how bad their intelligence is.
