Widening the war: the US sends troops to Israel : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 31/10/2024

Israel's attempt to reshape the Middle East, far from giving it enduring security, will merely serve to make it more vulnerable and unstable than ever.

I wonder what Trump would do if he wins. Weeks ago Biden said he would stop arms shipment to Israel if the civilian death toll was too great. Seemingly the arms kept coming so presumably a Harris win would continue that policy. The ABC pointed out that the IDF is bombing parts of Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Syria. Happy days for the US arms industry though perhaps the new approach is to starve civilians rather than bomb them. After all they could buy food with all the gold stored in hospital basements.

If the US declines to rein in Israel it will be a black stain on their international standing. The UK is apparently preparing a war crimes dossier on Israel. The US may be backing the wrong horse.

An excellent essay.

Its an indication of the US's clashing policies to Israel that:

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III vocally supports Israel no matter what it does, while

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is constantly shuttling to the Middle East with the purported aim of negotiating peace between Israel and Israel's enemies.

Also two US carrier battle groups in support of Israel in the region speak louder than the US's vacuous words of even handed peace-making.

A well written article of half truths.

Try a little honesty in your reporting Mr Binoy the boy who is having difficulty growing up!

Daniel Davis is right about the 100 U.S> troops.
They're a tripwire for Iran to pull U.S. into the conflict.

The increase of other U.S. carrier fleets in the region may be about the potential need to evacuate troops from U.S. bases under attack if necessary.

Maverick, Lloyd Austin and the DoD are probably the saner thinking group of the bunch.
They have a better idea of true U.S. military capabilities compared to Blinken and the State Dept who make more politically based decisions.

'purported aim of negotiating peace between Israel and Israel's enemies'.
Ahh.. is this what he's been doing? Lol
He's been doing a very poor job.
