The economic situation in Asia and the Pacific as of mid-2024 : Comments

By Ioan Voicu, published 20/6/2024

It is hoped the Summit will maintain its focus on the stated priority: renewing people's trust in global institutions by making them more representative of today's world and more effective in delivering on their commitments.

Dr. Voicu offers an insightful analysis relative to a promising upcoming meeting United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July to address the world economic situation and projections. In a political and economic environment that remains fraught with challenges, he addresses important developments, particularly in Asia. At the meeting, governments will assess opportunities and present strategies for economic growth in a tenuous political environment and under challenging inflationary pressure. In this context Thailand’s example might be considered, as a model of judicious monetary policy (while other Asian countries are facing double-digit inflation, Thailand’s is minimal) and astute planning. Among its plans are investing in infrastructure, building the Landbridge connecting the Indian and Pacific oceans and diverting traffic from the congested Malacca Strait and expanding Suvarnabhumi International Airport, as well as building two airports that would greatly improve tourist access. As always, I am grateful to read Dr. Voicu’s valuable insights on United Nations’ initiatives, especially its leadership in fostering economic and political stability and advancing of the UN SDGs worldwide.
