The California Energy Scam: Newsom’s actions of 'leaking' emissions to poorer developing countries : Comments

By Rolan Stein, published 20/2/2024

Cleaning up emissions in-state increases worldwide emissions by 'leaking' manufacturing to poorer developing countries with miniscule environmental regulations.

I think Australia will go down this path. A current example is nickel refining. Indonesia apparently powers this industry with coal as well as presumably lower wages. Now Australian nickel refiners are to get royalty relief. A more correct approach might be for other countries to slap carbon tariffs on nickel imports thus with lower tariffs on Australian nickel. The EU says they will do this soon (see CBAM) not sure about California.

I'm also sure Australia's aluminium smelting industry won't survive 82% renewables by 2030. We'll send coal and alumina to China so the emissions are on their books. Shame they get the profits and jobs and we have to buy back our own product.

The author asks: "Is it ethical for the California Governor to blatantly not abide by his own laws and violate his own states' legal framework to set his personal emissions policies?"

Clearly it is not ethical - how could it be?

Also: "...California's Governor Newsom continue to support subsidies to procure products from locations around the world that have minimal environmental regulations, when those subsidies are providing financial incentives to increase worldwide emissions by manufacturing offshore to countries where there are no environmental regulations and emissions are rampant."

Unfortunately, this is the US version of capitalism on open display.

Exporting emissions is a scam and not new. We do or did it. Moreover, our fossil fuel energy exports may contribute as much as 40% of global emissions.

When too clever by half, accounting makes emissions go away, they only go away on paper!

We've just had the warmest January on record and February is on track to record a similar outcome.

The UK is experiencing its mildest/warmest winter, with temperatures moving between 11 and 18C.

The ski fields of Europe are missing just one thing, snow and it too warm for the snow cannons.

We're in the grip of El Nino, made worse in WA by an Indian ocean dipole in positive mode.

The east coast saved and made wetter by an unusually strong polar vortex. These things usually last for weeks, this one lasting for months and may hang around for a few more, and contribute to more east coast cyclonic weather?

The oceans have absorbed some of the increased ambient temperatures and are a degree warmer than the late 19 hundreds.

Resulting in more humidity and western fronts carrying more moisture/rainfall. All because of a stubborn refusal to transition to nuclear power/MSR thorium, by a handful of recalcitrant conflicted or bought, bone head pollies!

And if the cap fits?
