Loathsome amiability: why watching Utopia hurts : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 19/7/2023

After four seasons, the well should have run dry, with those amiable darlings vanishing in a devastating Australian drought. But fecundity has returned, and the landscape abloom with flourishing feeds.

Well written and an enjoyable read, but what does it all mean?

The purposelessness ,(the quality of lacking any definite purpose), of all outside of the State bureaucracy, increases as that ballooning and consuming bureaucracy actually replaces Democracy as any worthwhile appendage with value, turning itself into the enemy of most.

This is what you get when houses of learning become business models populated by various narcissists, all of whom know that they are the cat's whiskers.

Utopia is the best thing on TV, and this series is even better than the previous ones. The writing is exquisite.

I’ve identified your problem from your comment, you confess your credibility in the ABC and as a consequence, I’d guess SBS as well.

Could I suggest you throw it out the back door and think for yourself!

It could be enlightening.

You may not be aware that Utopia is a fictional comedy show. Its quality has no bearing on the credibility, or lack thereof, of the ABC or SBS.

"Utopia is the best thing on TV,"

Well second best.

Utopia is bought to us by the original D Generation crowd who also gave us The Castle, The Dish and the brilliant Frontline, which, like Utopia critiqued a world that was full of hypocrisy (the 'Current Affairs' genre) and laid out the hypocrisy for all to see.

No one who is versed in Frontline could watch any current affairs show and not see through its cant curtesy of the tools provided by Frontline. Equally, anyone versed in Utopia, couldn't look at the disasters that are public infrastructure projects and not recognise the reasons for those disasters. Snowy 2.0 is easily understood through the Utopia lens. And even more so the current debacle over the Commonwealth Games funding.

Oh, and the best show on TV? From the same people and the same thoughtful irreverence - Have You Been Paying Attention.
