It is interesting reading in an educational magazine called Dissent, how John Bradford, a science teacher includes in a passage a lashing of the falsity of the reasoning of neo-liberal market economists who now dominate global economic thinking. Almost as if the urge for competition and consumerism and their effects on climate change will be balanced by the invisible hand of competitive forces.
Bradford is also concerned about John Howard's interest in certain Pentecostal right-wing religous groups who appear to be preaching a misguided Christianity in backing big business and corporatism, especially in risk ventures which are denuding and poisoning our planet.
Bradford also remarks how some of these very active and popular religous groups seem to be encouraging such modern marketing by their lack of protests about the ecology, not to worry so much about what we are doing to the planet because our Saviour will eventually return again and this time fix everything.
Sound like a good excuse to make hay while the sun shines. But goodness me, what a way to go.
