They worked until they died because they died well before modern people retire today.

More of the constant crap from people who are not of retirement age, or who are in jobs that don't require physical fitness. These people, like everyone else, don't know what it's like to be old until they reach old age themselves.

Such as people who are a "thought leader and media personality in the areas of social policy and foreign affairs". You can keep doing that sort of stuff until you are ga ga. Some are still doing it after they are ga ga

I quit work at 35, I am now 58. I'd seriously consider suicide if I had.to go baxk to.weok.life stops when yoi start work and starts when you stop work, the French know this. My only regret was not giving up earlier.

As for accounting, the funding is a hangover from an archaric system, that taxpayers fund of is a stupidity, IMO pensions will soon become the responsibility of the reserve bank to remove the cost off the government books. Inflation will be the only issue and even thats not understood by central banks, as US central bank head Powell pointed out recently.

Work is a necessity: a grind, for most people. Even those who claim to 'love' their jobs are suspect. I don't believe them. I have been retired for 23 years, and it beats work into a cocked hat as far as I am concerned. However, we all have to contribute while we can or have to, and the French, as always, are over the top. I believe that the new retirement age is now a done deal, and they will have to find something else to make morons of themselves over.

As we automate, and we will, all industry and primary production harvesting etc. Some will have to work at consuming just to keep the economy functioning. And will need to be paid just to consume as factories roll day and night with few if any human hands involved.

So, the age of retirement may be what you decide given those few that work will be highly skilled and highly paid. And essential as high tech, tech heads who keep the show on the road.

Consumers will retire when they're on the wrong side of the grass.

Let's hope we curb/limit/curtail migration before most of us become consumers only. And we have enough affordable housing to shelter us all.

If we have too many consumers when we automate the economy will self-detonate trying to carry an unsustainable load.

That said, there needs to be mandatory retirement for judges, public servants and overpaid politicians, preferably before dementia sets in and affects decisions and memory.

The Old Age Dole, needs to be replaced with a sustainable national supa scheme, and a National Seniors Service. Those on aged welfare, some racking up 30 years or more, one here admits he's racked up 23 years already. The claim "pensioners" are a special case is rubbish, no they didn't contribute to a retirement fund as is often claimed. It's simply the workers of today keeping some past layabouts in comfort down at God's Waiting Room, playing pokies, and drinking cheap beer.

Alan B.,
The nature of work will change, but it won't be limited to just a few. The government has, and will always have, the ability to ensure there are enough jobs for everyone.\

Valley Guy,
Being funded through the Reserve Bank doesn't remove the cost from government books. And if anything's to be funded directly from the RBA, it makes sense for it to be the kind of things that ultimately pay for themselves. Pensions will never fit that category.

If all those who are in unproductive jobs were suddenly made redundant, the Nation would go broke in a week !
