Councils are the main problem. After a marriage break up my daughter wanted to put a house to be relocated from a city development sight on my 20 acres. Council would not give approval, or for a new construction.

She is now going to put a granny flat on wheels, about a quarter the size, but at similar cost, because it beats the council bloody mindedness.

I am not in favor of the midget blocks now on offer in many places. My eldest daughter built on a smallish block, no where near as small as offered today, about 10 years ago. It was quite a nice development at the time, but small blocks do not allow families to develop. Today the original children have grown to teen agers & older. Each now have cars. They are parked all over the fronts of homes, spilling into the now too narrow streets, making access difficult in many places.

Developers & town planners need to be aware of what the new area will need & be like in 10 & 20 years time as families develop.

Local Government Associations are the root of the problem because they rooted just about everything in sight !
Councils can't even appoint a CEO if he/she isn't a member LGA !

I read this article and assessed it to have some merit so I am surprised and disgusted by the vitriol from some of the COMMENTators. Access to affordable and livable housing is a wicked societal problem. Bravo to the author for contributing to the discussion about how to make enough houses while positively enhancing the town and country environment.
