Inflation has not been around in western countries for some decades but now there is concern that inflation could return. Governments are printing unprecedented sums of money to pay for COVID recovery plans.

Price inflation is a tricky thing, mostly because of the manner in which it is measured (and thus manipulated). If we were measuring it in the same manner as was done decades ago, our current price inflation numbers would be significantly higher than the official statistics that guide our narrative about it. The other mitigating aspect is how all that newly-created fiat currency is 'spent'. Much of the new money has flowed into financial assets that don't get to be part of the bandied about consumer price index. Once all the money-from-heaven starts flowing into everyday products, then we might (depending on new manipulations) begin to witness far more official price inflation.
