Can the retreat of democracy be reversed? : Comments
By Alon Ben-Meir, published 23/11/2021I do not expect revolutionary and immediate measures to be adopted at the summit to save democracies from their rapid erosion in so many countries.

Interesting question Alon, and very hard to answer.

It can, but we need to call out all the divide and rule, extreme right-wing groups rather than pandering to their lunacy as the first and obvious threat to democracy! If they don't like majority representation?
Allow them to leave then cancel their passports! I mean they are the fifth columnists beavering away to remove or kill everything that's decent in a civilised society! So, invite them to leave and when they do, rescind all the rights they want to remove from the rest of us! Seems only fair? Alan B. Posted by Alan B., Tuesday, 23 November 2021 10:08:40 AM

Muslims have murdered 250 Australians.
The so called "far right" have murdered no Australians. The far left is leading the charge to divide our nation through identity politics. They are teaching our kids that there are 187 sexes. They are enacting legislation to ban free speech. And they are teaching our kids that everything that goes wrong with western society is all the white man's fault. And who is Alan B. afriad of? The far right. Brilliant logic. Posted by LEGO, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 10:44:05 AM

The retreat of democracy (more accurately the driving out of democracy) cannot be reversed unless we want it to be; and the drones don’t even know that it is disappearing. So, the answer is probably ‘no’. Who among us even knew there was Summit for Democracy?
I don’t know if anyone from Australia is attending, but we should be concentrating on own sliding democracy, and not relying on global, corrupt organisations (e.g the UN) to tell us what to do. Posted by ttbn, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 10:50:37 AM

These two references are very much about the present state of politics and culture, particularly in the Western world

The Summit for Democracy is a cheap PR exercise by the Biden Administration keen to show that America is Back on the World Stage rather than any serious attempt to stop the backsliding of democracy.
The biggest threat to democracy has come from pretend democracies and empires like the USA, UK, France and Germany who have used democracy as an excuse to suppress freedom, human rights and rule of law. It is laughable to expect the military industrial and intelligence cartel known as NATO or the corrupt political elites in the EU to advance democracy, human rights and rule of law when they exist to suppress any independent thinking and action in Europe and the Middle East. The USA has become an evil empire that supports any dictator who gives it access to its budgets and control of its affairs. They mistreatment of Macedonia is a case in point where they support new despotism who sell out their history, identity, democracy and rule of law. The best thing the Biden Administration can do is to stop selling its foreign and defense capabilities to the highest bidder and release their longest serving political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal Posted by Macedonian advocacy, Wednesday, 24 November 2021 1:38:52 PM

But if they managed that atrocity in Europe, then no wonder European parties support gun control.
In a democracy, changes to a national constitution can only be done by plebiscite, usually requiring a very clear majority of support. Somehow the elites have disenfranchised the populations of entire nations and now demand submission to whatever definition of "human rights" that they choose to define. Bugger that.
Thank God that first Britain, and now Poland, is standing up to these new European authoritarians. The other East Europeans nations are not far emulating Poland, as these countries already have experience in being subjugated by a monolithic bully that tried to impose it's will on their resisting populations.
The threat to democracy comes from elitist bureaucrats, academics, and a fake news press employing "journalists" like Alon ben Meir who prosper by pushing the elitist woke agenda, to curry favour with their rich corporate employers.
Identity politics will kill democracy. Which is exactly what the socialist left want. They dream of a supposedly utopian society like China, where the "intelligent" people like themselves get to tell the dummies, who make up the rest of the population, what to do. That so many rich people see advantages in such a system for themselves, is probably because they are dumb enough to think, that by hook or by crook, somehow they will end up seizing the reins of power from the ideologues.
