The turning point of Australia's modern gun regulations dates back to the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which cost the lives of 35 people as a result of a rifle rampage.

Well I was wrong there, she’s apparently very pro gun and a defender of the 2nd Amendment, which raises the question of why she got so much wrong in her article.

Alan re your Port Arthur hot coffee comment. What stopped the shooting in the cafe was the AR15 blowing up on Bryant with third shot of second magazine. Faulty chinese ammo. Fate! If he had had the 2 taped magazines the other way around it would have stopped at 3 shots.
A factor in priming Port Arthur was a prior trade deal by Australia where we accepted a crate of 10 semi-auto chinese rifles with 1000 rounds of ammunition included, to pay off chinese wheat sale debts. The whole crate sold for around $200.
Tasmanian salmon farm protectors bought lots of them to "control" the seal predation. Some of these were found in the later burnt house.
