The Census clairvoyant: futures told : Comments

By Ross Elliott, published 14/7/2021

Despite all the debate and discussion about Covid-19 and working from home (WFH), the increase in the overall proportion of people working from home won't be as great as much of the media might have you think.

I wonder if people working from home and those thinking about working from home have thought about the fact that 'home' for people working for Australian companies might not necessarily be in Australia.

Greedy, unpatriotic big business and not so big business have moved jobs overseas to get cheaper workers in the manufacturing sector. Cheaper workers in China, India etc can do the same things white collar workers doing clerical, professional or whatever sort of things they do via the internet can do for a lot less than Australian employees can

Disagree! This pandemic and all she wrote, will likely be one of many in the foreseeable future!

Moreover, there does seem to be a more productive workplace in the home? And as that happens wherever possible? Less gridlocked commuter highways!

Getting folk out of overcrowded gridlocked inner cities has been a blessing in disguise!

As for learning at home?

Well, some regional schools are still doing face to face teaching, teaching which could be videoed and sent via a live feed to all home tutored kids.

So, given the same learning difficulties exist across the board! Then those kids that are the slow learners can record from the live feed and restudy the appropriate solutions that have always been there for those home tutored!

As for the rest of the nation? I see a time not too far ahead, when factories roll day and night with very few humans included! Meaning, the empty regions will be the least expensive option for this production.

And I see sanity finally prevailing in Australia and Australia embracing nuclear energy to support the above-referenced production.

ABROAD JOB CONSULTANCY

Much is claimed of management consultancy by critics and celebrants alike. Through shaping and legitimizing ideas and catalysing change, it has impacted on management practice and people’s lives more generally. Given the growth of consultancy as an industry and wider activity, few have challenged these views. However, there are good reasons for treating them with some caution. In particular, its impact is exaggerated in geographical scope and confused with that of management ideas in general - consultancy as a scapegoat for management. At the same time, recent changes in both the nature and status of management and of consultancy have rendered traditional boundary distinctions less tenable such that the scope and impact of consultancy may be even greater than is typically assumed. Overall, its impact has been both under- and overstated. The article therefore argues for a more cautious and critical approach. This recognises consultancy as an integral part of management, where its distinctive role lies more in its structural position and ambiguous visibility and accountability than its practices, skills or occupational/professional identity claims. The research agenda thus becomes one of more clearly identifying the consequences of management as well as of consultancy, in part through a consideration of contexts where they are, or were, largely absent
