Social media has huge problems with free speech and moderation. Could decentralised platforms fix this? : Comments

By Chris Berg, Elizabeth Morton and Marta Poblet, published 19/3/2021

Over the past few months, Twitter took down the account of the then-President of the United States and Facebook temporarily stopped users from sharing Australian media content.

I think social media platforms are as important as newspapers...not very...and not worth the worry.

Look at how clean those countries are that have limited 'free speech" & then take a look at those where "free speech" is being used to indoctrinate people & turn them into useless & obese, unkempt tattooed slobs !
Where "free speech" is destroying cultures & environments !

Indy, I can't see the correlation or connection between free speech and any of what you say, especially obesity.
Added to that is your reference to a country being "clean", also attributed, somehow, to free speech.
Can you please elaborate, as your comments do not make sense, as they currently stand.

ALTRAV,
Well, from my perspective it's "free speech" that doesn't permit anyone anymore to tell someone that they are fat, stupid, useless, unpresentable slobs ! That is a massive stumbling block in trying to get society back to a sustainable standard.

Indy, right, gotcha.
Completely agree.
Might I also add the other corrupting medium, which is also infecting society in a most dangerous and sinister way, just as much as the restraining of free speech, and that is Political Correctness.
A most vial and egregious linguistic disease, that if left unchecked or un-challenged, will destroy society and it's ability to function in an honest, truthful and open way.
PC is a language for liars.
The very title tells us that.
If something is correct, it's correct.
Anything other than correct, such as POLITICALY correct, obviously is something other than correct.
This can then be expanded all the way through to eventually mean, A LIE!
And so it is that people have to remain vigilant and discard their lazy notions of "she'll be right mate", and start taking in what is put out there, especially when it involves and affects the people.
They must stop and disseminate, critique, question and asses everything they read, see and hear, especially if it involves people and affects their lives or lifestyle.

ALTRAV,
The sad reality is that many of the brainless wonders who subscribe to the insidious nonsense that is PC is that, so-called "free speech" is ain actual fact more oppressive than anything else !

Dan might be right about the lack of importance of social media. Take Twitter, for instance. The are only 4 million Twitter accounts in Australia - 15% of the population. That's only 5% more than the miserable misfits who support the totally unimportant Greens.

ttbn, true.
Unimportant AND totally irrelevant.
Like the 'renewables' debacle, TOTALLY IRRELEVANT!
I absolutely loved the news recently where, I believe Germany had an extreme cold event, and ALL their wind and solar assets were frozen solid, some to the point of needing major repairs to be able to go back into service, and more than a few are right-offs.
In the meantime they called upon the good ole fossil fuel powered generators to take over and supply them with strong, reliable electricity.
All the usual pathetic excuses and recriminations did not help the twats who pushed for renewables, as the proof has come to the fore and knocked them to the floor.
Which is what should happen to all those who promote childish and ideological and unproven views or ideas, like the worthless, useless greens, and their supporters.
Not one brain amongst the lot of em', even collectively.

Despite difficulties with moderation, Facebook said it was able to make improvements with its artificial intelligence technology. The company has improved its rate of quickly detecting hateful content, justification of terrorism and sexual harassment posts.Due to Covid most of the moderators now work from home, with a small portion remaining in Facebook offices to moderate live video, to tell the truthnot only them trend to be so seriuos even the simple slots no-deposit gameplay need registration and proof that you are over 18, as an example this guys - https://greatcasino.com.au/playamo-casino/, we are living in the era of identification.

Let me say, from my observations, watching our politicians at work (sic...working for their own ends and interests. EG our lady muck, the Premier of NSW who gave her boyfriend a few million NSW taxpayer dollars to play land developer with and escaped Scott free), that lot; is likened in my mind to the growing crowd of mindless morons who followed Forest Gump on his famed run across the US, and waited with baited breath on every utterance he never made.

Jacqui Lambie summed them up beautifully, describing them all as a bunch of children.

It’s the result of power vested in the hands of those who matter, those born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

It’s the gutless nature of those individuals which constitutes the gutless responses from the parliament itself IMO.

Diver Dan, hear, hear, I wish there were more like minded, open minded, thinking people out there.
We have the regulars who seem to think they own OLO and their opinions are worthwhile.
Both male and female, one either quotes others in plagiarizing every word as though we are stupid and only she knows about the topic, and feels the need to explain everything, adnauseam.
Her contributions are of little or no value, if others are dismissed or rejected as a matter of course.
Then we have the other who seems to lack in linguistic skills and resorts to personal attacks, as a left/green supporter would, because their arguments and submission begin at a very low and un-informed baseline, thereby exhausting any chance of engaging in good, solid, well informed intercourse.
I have had to resign myself to the fact that, for there to be the informed and inquisitive kind like myself, there must, by nature, be the un-informed, mis-informed, dumbed down, who are too lazy or just not up to the task of knowing the truth about ANYTHING!

billielove, unless you are providing these alleged services for free, you can't advertise on this medium, without approval or special dispensation from OLO, that is.
I do not know of, at this time, the existence of ANY special dispensation or tolerance towards advertising on here.
I assume one of the moderators will wake up any time soon and "pull" your add.
The longer your add stays up, the more whatever you are selling will stink, and it will in fact have the opposite effect/result, in that it will turn people away from what you are promoting.
That's just the way it is!
