The Pacific needs our help – and it needs it now : Comments

By Jeffrey Wall, published 24/2/2021

The first step needs to be to enable travel between Australia and regional neighbours where Covid-19 numbers are very low to resume as soon as possible. The most obvious example is Fiji.

given few cases of covid in Fiji, a travel bubble between them and us seems like a great way to uphold an important Pacific relationship.

..... a vaccination program and a travel bubble established so they can get back to work.
Paul1405,
So much easier said than done ! You need to do better than that because if the authorities did re-introduce travel of the willy-nilly kind, who do you think would be the loudest screamers if COVID-19 flared up again ?

Hi Indy,

There is growing concern in the Islands that vaccination in Australia and New Zealand is the number one priority and the Islanders are only an afterthought, and as usual are being put at the back of the queue.

Of course for a travel/tourist bubble, stringent controls such as only vaccinated people and those clear of any symptoms etc can travel.

Paul1405,
Just out of curiosity, do the indigenous Fijians blame all their woes on their Indian invaders like the Australians do here ?

No Indy, I haven't found that, the Fijians are a happy go lucky people, and don't seem to feel they have woes as such, but rather setbacks they seem to take in their stride. I have friends both indigenous and Indian, generally the relationship is harmonious. The friend with the taxi, spends a lot of his time helping the locals and he thinks nothing of it. Our organisation does not discriminate, all Fijians are eligible, its based on need not race.
