A big problem for America is "prolonging the stay" of Pelosi in Congress.

Law and order eh? Enforced say, by firing tear gas into a peaceful rally for a photo op?
Or shooting an unarmed civilian in the back seven times as he tries to enter his car? Kneeling on a man's neck until he dies? Is that what you mean by law enforcement, David? Unca Donal hasn't got much going for him but law and order? And there's some oportunistic vigilante shooting, looting and arson! Which needs to be separated from peaceful protest and treated as the separate issues they surely are. In the meantime, Unca Donal needs to keep doing what he is so good at, artful distraction and inflaming racial division? Making out that white supremists and the KKK are among the good guys? I'm sure you will agree? Alan B. Posted by Alan B., Saturday, 29 August 2020 10:37:03 AM

I assume you saw the video Alan. The guy had been ordered to stop. He continued to walk to the car, opened the door & reached in to get only he knew what.
So many cops have been shot & killed in the US that they are are a bit sensitive to people refusing a lawful order, & reaching for what could be an assault rifer. If your interpretation of that video is an innocent man shot by police you are obviously suffering from Trump derangement syndrome or are simply a radical ratbag, or both, looking for anything to justify your stupidity. Have a nice day won't you. Posted by Hasbeen, Saturday, 29 August 2020 10:57:46 AM

Law and order issues certainly do separate Republicans from Democrats, but if you ignore the Republican rhetoric for a few minutes and look at what the Democrats are actually trying to do, you'll see it makes a lot of sense.
Republicans think a tougher response is the answer. Democrats recognise that this is not the answer at all, and indeed is the cause of many of the problems. The real answer is a smarter response: the police should work to deescalate situations to prevent crowds from turning violent. Similarly, the situation where people are unwilling to report crime or fully cooperate with the police because of fear of deportation is undesirable. The police shouldn't let victimless crime hamper their efforts to deal with real crime. Posted by Aidan, Saturday, 29 August 2020 11:05:06 AM

The Biden Democrats are going to LOSE
unless they begin to be perceived as being on the side of Law and Order. Too many black demonstrations (for whatever good BLM intentions) are being seen by Whites as "rising crime and vilence, lack of safety, and defunding policing". This alienates the majority of voters (who are White Middle class Big C Conservatives). What we are seeing in the USA right now, is the inevitable effects of multiculturalism, and how racial division can be exploited by those who seek to destroy western democracy.
The Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone nailed it when he once stated that the USA was once strong when it was a majority white country. But now it was going downhill because there were too many blacks, Hispanics, and Puerto Ricans. If his statement is racist, it is also the truth. The Democrats have hit upon a winning election strategy that is tearing their country apart. That is, to focus their policies upon the ever growing trouble prone minorities in the USA who are very disproportionately represented in welfare dependency, criminal behaviour, and now, terrorism. They never tire of telling these dysfunctional minorities that the reason why the majority of them are so dysfunctional and poor is because of the white race. Thus the democrats are stoking the fires of race hatred among minorities towards white people. That is why the Dems support open borders, the more dysfunctional minorities who come to America and vote Democrat, the better for the Democratic Party. The Dems could not care les about whatever crime the new immigrants bring with them. And if this is allowed to continue, then there will be no difference between North or South America when it comes to lifestyles. Both continents will eventually become as dysfunctional as South American countries are today. The voting divide in the USA now consists of the left which comprises much of the public service (except the police), dumb blacks, dumb Hispanics, and Muslims, socialist brainwashed humanities students and academics of universities, and many of the nuvoux rich who wish to assuage their guilt at being successful. The right consists of working and middle class white people, along with the smart blacks and smart Hispanics, and rich people who know they became successful because of their intelligence and hard work. Multiculturalism creates diversity. Diversity is division. We have allowed this crazy policy to divide western nations and than are surprised when western nations implode Posted by LEGO, Sunday, 30 August 2020 7:07:18 AM

White middle-class suburbs are marching to protest racism and police violence?
Whole sports industries to a man are joining in with player boycotts etc. I deplore senseless violence, given all it does is play into the hands of morally bankrupt politicians! I disagree that I have a Trump syndrome. But would reply to Hasbeen's critigue, with the observation that he and all on the alt right would seem to have been afflicted with the Sergeant Schultz syndrome? A man didn't need to be shot seven times by a psycohtic, control freak cop, for failing to obey a direction! No matter how you say it Hasbeen, you cannot justify attempted murder as an Ok response! It's is your morally bankrupt attitude that needs an attitudinal adjustment, not mine! A native policeman would have put a hand over his head and fingers into his eyeballs from behind, with enough force to oblige him to. #1/ pull/force his head back as far as it would go. #2/ move backward at a rate of knots to both, stay upright and comply with directions. No ifs, buts or maybes! As for Trump? He may well win an unwinnable election? He has done some good stuff! None better than lifting an asinine decades long prohibition on thorium R+D Conversely, none worse than tear gassing a peaceful protest to enable a ultra-cynical extraordinarily hypocritical photo op! Biden is counting on winning by not being Trump and needs a lot more than that, but a grab bag of inspirational big ideas that fire the imagination, hope and unity! Roads and bridges, is hardly new or inspirational! You'll have a nice day now y'hear. Alan B. Posted by Alan B., Sunday, 30 August 2020 12:16:47 PM

With over 170,000 deaths, hitting hard at black, indigenous, and latino, it will be a grim irony indeed, if Trump wins on a "law and order" ticket.
America has been a race economy (Dickerson might call it a caste economy) for 400 years. Without wishing to sing any great praises for Biden, or Pelosi, does the author not fear that a Trump victory will make the chasm that much worse? What would the author do, if the Jewish caste were routinely murdered by police? Smile sweetly? 40% of US blacks are completely supported by the US taxpayers.
"African/Americans" are 13% of the US population and contribute only 2% towards taxation. “… between 2001 and 2003, blacks were 39 times more likely to commit violent crimes against whites than the reverse, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.” Between 2001 and 2003, blacks committed, on average, 15,400 black-on-white rapes per year, while whites averaged only 900 white-on-black rapes per year. “Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.” Black Americans experience 19.5 gun deaths per 100 000; whites just 2.5. Given that most gun deaths are committed by the same race as the victims, whites (rightly) conclude that they are not the main problem: blacks are 8 times more likely to be gun killers. There are dramatic race differences in crime rates. Asians have the lowest rates, followed by whites, and then Hispanics. Blacks have notably high crime rates. This pattern holds true for virtually all crime categories and for virtually all age groups. In 2013, a black was six times more likely than a non¬black to commit murder, and 12 times more likely to murder someone of another race than to be murdered by someone of another race. In 2014 in New York City, a black was 31 times more likely than a white to be arrested for murder, and a Hispanic was 12.4 times more likely. For the crime of “shooting” — defined as firing a bullet that hits someone — a black was 98.4 times more likely than a white to be arrested, and a Hispanic was 23.6 times more likely. If New York City were all white, the murder rate would drop by 91 percent, the robbery rate by 81 percent, and the shootings rate by 97 percent. In an all¬-white Chicago, murder would decline 90 percent, rape by 81 percent, and robbery by 90 percent. But for racists like Alon B and Steve S, it's always the white guys fault. Come on LEGO, you can try harder than that. Surly you can find more clichés and bigoted positions to hold than what you have demonstrated thus far. You are proof of that old saying: there are lies, damn lies and politicians (or their supporters) arguing statistics.
The reality is that the USA is mired in a cesspool of racial hatred, spurred on and supported by a maniacal president who will do and say anything in a desperate attempt not to lose. A president who cares stuff-all for the job of being president, but whose giant ego can’t face rejection. Any society that accepts, excuses or condones superiority of one race over another has simply lost its own humanity. No amount of right-wing-nut-jobs name calling will, or can, change that. Dear Hasbeen,
Alan is right. What an utterly morally bankrupt position to take. How would anyone not seeped in racist attitudes think that the gunning down of that man in cold blood was in any way defensible? The fact that you have your nose slammed so far up your president's backside has obviously blinded you to any notion of natural justice. You are a cultist, a sick and warped individual who really needs to have a good hard look at himself. Wake up you little sheep. Posted by SteeleRedux, Monday, 31 August 2020 8:02:51 PM

SR,
Once again you have demonstrated your moral virtue signalling. While nothing justifies the shooting of an innocent man, the prevelance of guns in the US society and the propensity of criminals to use them to shoot police means that the behaviour of the victims plays a huge part in the outcome. Secondly that the majority of victims are white blows a major hole in the rhetoric of the BLM claims. In 2019 8 unarmed black men were killed by police nearly all of them were criminals, whereas 38 policemen were shot and killed in the line of duty. The law and order issue comes in when mobs deviate from peaceful protesting and go on rampages burning and looting, and democratic controlled cities do little to nothing to protect the lives and property of their citizens. And even take measures to prevent federal police from getting involved. This may not be the defining factor in the elections, as Trump's buffoonery may yet bring him down, but for the "silent majority" their safety matters. Dear shadowminister,
You wrote: “2019 8 unarmed black men were killed by police” You really have to stop putting out statistics you have gleaned from far-right tweeters. This has figure has already been debunked. Leaving aside the utterly woeful rules around police reporting around a thousand people were shot and killed by police in 2019. Of those 13 were unarmed black men and one unarmed black woman. However this does not include other unarmed people who like Floyd George who were killed by lethal physical restraint or by taser or any other form besides shooting. Nor does it includes those like 12 year old Tamir Rice, who was playing with a BB gun in a park when shot by Cleveland police within seconds of them attending the playground. As to your 38 police shot in the line of duty this is indeed a tragedy, but 228 died by their own hands over the same period, several after being involved in fatal police shootings. https://www.smh.com.au/world/north-america/in-pivotal-battleground-kenosha-residents-consider-changing-sides-20200901-p55r4v.html Whether it is 8 or 14 unarmed blacks shot by police, (most of those killed were armed) it is a rounding error when compared to the nearly 3000 blacks killed by other blacks. "In 2018, where the homicide victim was black, the suspected killer also was 88 percent of the time. And this is not an exceptional situation. From 1976 to 2005, 94 percent of black victims were killed by other African Americans. " This is the Democrats Achilles heel. (SMH) "With tens of millions of Americans out of work and 180,000 dead after contracting COVID-19, Trump has leapt upon law and order as a potential game-changer that could deliver him four more years in the White House. Unlike the violence playing out in other American cities, Kenosha sits inside a pivotal battleground state, giving the unrest here added political potency. Robert Nelson, a former president of the Danish Brotherhood Lodge, says the destruction over recent days has caused a lot of locals who planned to vote against Trump to think again. "The Democrats are losing ground," Nelson says. "A lot of Democrats aren't really denouncing this or trying to prevent violence from flaring up." Considering that there are nearly 700 000 police officers in the US answering millions of calls every day, facing people that are frequently armed, the chances of error are magnified. David, as a wordsmith advocating for Unca Donal, your contribution is, I believe, the most outrageous risible rubbish and that is, I believe high praise indeed, in context?
You'll have a nice day now, y'hear.
