More time lost before imposing ‘full’ lockdown means more COVID-19-related deaths : Comments

By Bahauddin Foizee, published 9/4/2020

The cities and countries that imposed 'early' lockdowns are experiencing fewer cases of COVID-19 patients

Very true when the author says:

"The situations in a number of COVID-19-hit countries - such as Italy and the USA - are excellent examples of what can happen if lockdown is delayed.

...The US, too, is heading in the same direction, with the country's number of infected patients exceeding both China and Italy, while the death toll is catching up as well. Clearly, the Italian and American governments have wasted plenty of time before imposing their lockdowns, allowing the virus to spread throughout a large portion of the population."

But beware, doubting Trump's idiotic, expert advice opposed, egotistical, handling of the

COVID threat to America IS TO OFFEND SO MANY OLO COMMENTERS WHO WORSHIP TRUMP.

So easy for those who's livelihood & wellbeing is not endangered, but perhaps even enhanced, by the coronavirus to pontificate on these things. I wonder if all taxpayer funded income was withdrawn for the time of any lock down, if they would still be so gung-ho with such advice?

To brighten up the day of OLO-pudlians reading this article, here's a little poem I wrote:

With apologies to a pretty good band :) *

When we find ourselves in times of COVID
Months of hopefulness decree
There will be a vaccine
Let it be.

And in lonely hours of darkness typing
Listening to the crash of sea
Good Friday comes tomorrow
Let it be

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, yeah let it be.
Whisper joys pre-COVID
Let it be

* Very much inspired by the Beatles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_impact_of_the_Beatles – who perform it here http://youtu.be/7P6X3IWLECY

Yup! But particularly when we don't yet have a vaccine for SARS1!

That even a mild infection can result in hospitalisation!

That it can live for a week or longer on the inside of a once used, then disposed of, surgical mask!

Transmission may not be limited to other humans, but our furry feline friends, given they can catch it and don't give even lip service to social distancing but rub themselves against each other and you! Go out and honeymoon with their feral feline friends, who may have alsorts? And attend to all personal hygiene with their tongue! Never ever worry about toilet tissue!

Unless we get an effective vaccine or enough natural immunity to make collecting and dispensing antibody loaded plasma?

There could be a second wave and as with the Spanish flu, a third and a fourth?

Agree with the Author, the time to get on top of this pandemic, was before it got here and by closing the borders and requiring all incoming travellers, our and others, to be quarantined in offshore quarantine for up to a month and not allowed out if positive, until they test negative for the last two weeks of a month of enforced isolation.

Here at home the economic outcomes of a total shut down for two weeks less severe than what is now our immediate economic future!

But would have needed to be enforced with armed guards!

Would've been very, very unpopular and probably cost the government the next election and our patently indifferent, chief medical officer his preferred herd immunity?

Now instead of an immediate lockdown and quarantines? We have the biggest spend by our government in our history!

Does anyone believe we can sill keep negative gear and capital gains subsidies, and super Super!? While we have this crippling debt around our taxpayer's necks? And how hard is going to be given a lengthy recession or even, God help us, a depression, to rip back jobseeker? Or index pensions?

Bet your bottom dollar, parliamentary salaries won't be frozen nor their ultra generous retirement benefits or entitlements?

Footnote: Given covid-19 can live on the inside of a disused and tossed surgical mask for a week or more, How safe is much handled, paper money or polymer banknotes?

Rubber gloves only protect the wearer and can easily transfer the virus from one object or product to any other! Hands that are frequently sanitised with alcohol-based (75%) sanitizers are safer than gloves for the consumer!

So, don't be an angry old man if the shopping assistant is not wearing gloves? Put a pair on to unpack and wipe everything with a sanitising wipe and wash all fresh produce, before refrigerating. If you don't have chlorinated town water? Add a few teaspoons of bleach to the wash water.

Take care and stay safe. AT HOME!

Hi Hasbeen

Before you say ABC here's one about your idol mate:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-10/coronavirus-triggers-struggle-between-donald-trump-and-china/12138772

By Washington bureau chief David Lipson, today

"Yesterday in America, 1,940 people died from coronavirus. In a single day, 31,935 new infections were recorded.

I personally know five people who have been told they have COVID-19.

Only one of them was able to get a test and it came back inconclusive.

The rest were told by their doctors "don't bother" because there weren't enough test kits to go around.

On the testing front, things have improved greatly in recent weeks, but not everywhere.

A New York ambulance paramedic told the ABC this week tests were still hard to come by, even for frontline health workers.

And yet, since the start of the crisis, the President has boasted about America's testing capacity.

"Anyone who needs a test gets a test … and they're beautiful," Donald Trump said during a tour of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

That was five weeks ago.

In New York, things are looking so dire that workers are being asked to don protective gear as they dig mass graves on Hart Island in the Bronx."

The author is so ignorant why would anyone listen to him? He babbled about Last century there were three flu pandemics. The 1918 one killed more than all the wars in the 20th century put together and he did not know that? The man is a fool and how these doughnuts get published never mind paid for the junk they write amazes me.
Oh yes there was also 1957 1.1 million and 1968 1 million. At no stage were there any lock downs in 1957 0r 68 and even in 1918 did the sort of nonsense we have allowed ourselves to be subjected was attempted.
Idiot Andrews and his serious "If it saves one life"? Well that will be what he says when he starts on stealing more of our money!

Waited a while before commenting on this. In the midst of what is going on, with Cha-ina opening the floodgates form Wuhan, while we can clearly see they have been hiding the real figures and twisting the WHO to delay pandemic declaration...etc. Authors like this probably mean well, but like the woe fall ABC, that we pay $1billion per annum for, their radically left-wing producers and their puppet "opinionated news show hosts,.. he is contributing nothing. Listen to the Chief Medical officer and two deputies, forget the rest of the drivel out their.. its just confusing, opinion and often dangerously wrong.

Never since world war 2, has the phrase/slogan " Loose lips cost live!"!

Time was lost!

The Italian crisis started, we're told, with a single non-symptomatic, Chinese tour who was welcomed with open arms along with his pocketbook!

Their disastrous outcome, due to the time they lost before getting a handle on it AND NOT LISTENING TO THE SCIENCE!

We precious decades not listening to the science on climate change, some of which may be related to this pandemic?

We know when humankind first climbed out of the trees, the percentage of oxygen in the air was around 51%? Nowadays around 20% or less than half?

Some municipalities still use oxygen to sanitise town water, given its ability to kill known pathogens/many viruses?

And an atmosphere with more than twice our current percentage of oxygen would likely do likewise? Once we start to draw down the CO2 levels and replace them with oxygen from traditional sources!

And means, unless we want even more contagious pathogens to threaten whole economies and livelihoods, we need to transition away from fossil fuels without delay!

Good news is, doing just that and now, with the right energy paradigm and economic plan, will not just jump-start stalled economies and livelihoods, but put them into warp speed overdrive! I kid you not!

However, my bet is, conflicted pollies and leaders owned by various oil, coal and gas oligarchs, will want to go back to business as usual and return to the madness that brought his pandemic to our doorstep!

I HOPE BEYOND HOPE THEY WILL PROVE ME WRONG AND CONTINUE WITH THE CURRENT LEVEL OF COOPERATION TO TURN THIS TITANIC OF A DISASTER AROUND BEFORE WE SMASH INTO THAT ICEBERG OF A CLIMATE DISASTER, WHILE WE STILL HAVE A LITTLE TIME!

And with, a, there's no time to lose urgency! And with it done? Also, create massive wealth and retire all current debt via COOPERATIVE CAPITALISM and the massive economic growth we'd create! ANY OF YOU (deaf and blind) TROGOLYTES HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT OR PERSONAL WEALTH/OPPORTUNITIES?

Time really is of the essence and in so many ways and on so many fronts!

AJ That's just your opinion! And a usual, you are talking from way too far down! It's your kind that refuses to be guided by the science/experts that then create/allow almost every formerly manageable crisis.

I mean, the Great Depression started as a manageable recession but turned into the Great Depression by nincompoops/conservatives, like your very opinionated self?

When you have some hardwon personal expertise of your own!?

You may be better equipped to decide what is just ill-informed opinion and expert advice!

All science and knowledge/disciplines, came from folk without traditional learning, as has all new inventions!

And those with alphabet soup after their name don't have exclusive ownership of intelligence or knowledge!

e.g., A good cook is only as knowledgeable as the library of recipe books she owns! Ditto any acidemic especially those who critique Dr Google but rely on him for their pass marks or diagnoses?.

Take care and stay safe.

No flu deaths other than Covid 19 deaths in New York in the last couple of months. Starting to look like stats about as accurate and dishonest as gw models.

Alan b, such hubris I have never seen, such insults are so common, yet you need to learn the value of Occam's razor, and then people might read your posts.

By the way, did you send that rejected OLO article? Despite your hubris and insults, I would still like to read in confidence.
