Why all the populism? A fair take on the political currents of 2019 : Comments
By Sean Jacobs, published 2/1/2020Trump, Boris, ScoMo and even Trudeau's razor-thin Canadian victory reveal that centre-left politics is, to say the least, failing to connect at the ballot box.

Well, & who brought it all on ? Not the less-educated blue collar workforce !

Pretty one-sided take on things but not without some substance. However to say "Australians remain in a good place on immigration – unmanipulated, enthusiastic but also common sense." when we took nearly 800,000 into the country last year is just trite.
The amount of asylum seekers who arrive by plane under Dutton's watch is outstripping those through the Rudd/Gillard era without a civil war occurring just an Indian Ocean away. The Gina Reinharts of this world have driven huge increases in 457 visa holders, many who go on to earn permanent residencies. Large demographic changes in our cities and towns have occurred as a result. It suits big companies not to pay the taxes which would have schooled Australian youth to take these jobs but rather fly these workers in instead. It is a far more compliant workforce to boot. There is no doubt that Labour was not prepared to take the running on this and they rightly got spanked for not doing so. But to say we are in a good place on immigration is misreading community sentiment. Posted by SteeleRedux, Thursday, 2 January 2020 6:03:22 PM

Quite refreshing Sean that someone gets it. Overall I think you are fairly close to the mark. The uprising of media outlets that aren't lying and liberal (like the abc) has also exposed the fraudulent nature of the left. The 'swamp' as Donald calls it is no longer trusted. With constant lies about man made climate change, immigration and social engineering we now have multiple outlets exposing these frauds. No wonder Trump is so popular.

As academics like Matthew Goodwin and Eric Kaufmann have recently argued, voters in Western countries are unnerved and concerned about rapid demographic changes driven by unprecedented immigration. They are not opposed to new migrants but don't want their communities and country to become unrecognisable. They want a slower pace of change and are attached to their own group. Under multiculturalism, minorities are encouraged to practice group attachment but members of the old European-origin majority are condemned if they do the same. This has caused resentment and is fuelling the populist backlash.
Eric Kaufmann's book "Whiteshift" is a must read if you want to understand what's happening in the West at the moment. Posted by FrankU, Friday, 3 January 2020 6:00:29 PM

Sean Jacobs claims that "Australians remain in a good place on immigration." I have to ask what planet Sean resides on.
Australia has the highest per capita rate of immigration in the developed world. This is placing immense strain on infrastructure, housing, living standards and the socio-cultural fabric. All the recent surveys have shown that high immigration has become increasingly unpopular among voters. Poll results include: Newspoll: 56% want lower immigration; Essential: 54% believe Australia’s population is growing too fast and 64% believe immigration is too high; Lowy: 54% of people think the total number of migrants coming to Australia each year is too high; Newspoll: 74% of voters support the Coalition Government’s cut of more than 10% to the annual permanent migrant intake to 163,000 last financial year; CIS: 65% in the highest income decile and 77% in the lowest believe that immigration should be cut or paused until critical infrastructure has caught up; ANU: Only three out of 10 Australians believe the nation needs more people; Newspoll: 80% of NSW voters do not want the state’s population to increase; Australian Population Research Institute: 72% of voters say Australia does not need more people; 50% want immigration to be reduced. http://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2019/05/australian-voters-ignored-immigration/ Furthermore, research by the Australian Population Research Institute has found that a majority of Australians are concerned about the pace of immigration-fuelled cultural change. See: http://tapri.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Tapri-survey-2018-final-report-April.pdf Australia's current immigration policies are undemocratic and damaging. Frank U,
You reckon Australians will do anything about these imbalances ? We got an almost tiny chance with the Coalition in charge but Buckley's if the Insipids get in again ! Posted by individual, Friday, 3 January 2020 10:09:58 PM

Both the major parties are addicted to crazily high immigration. Labor wants to import a new constituency. The Liberals want to import cheaper labour and more customers for their big business mates. Both use mass immigration to make the economy look bigger. A populist challenge from the right might force the Liberals into cutting immigration. This could come from without (another party) or within. Posted by FrankU, Monday, 6 January 2020 12:15:48 AM

force the Liberals into cutting immigration.
Frank U, Immigration as such has worked pretty well for Australia, I'm living proof hehe ! ;-) I think people tend to overlook that the 'wrong' immigrants came in via the back door & now they're out-babying the genuine migrants. That's what ALP/LNP et al need to take a more sober look at. The 'experts' too need to go back to school to learn about reality. One way to achieve a more reasonable view of things would be to cut back on the salaries of the many incompetents within the public sector who sell us out to the highest bidder.
