mmadpat,
That's what the control freaks want us to believe & the mess we're in is with the training wheels still in place.

A two tone Ford Zephyr Mk1 was my first car. It had an ‘audio attractant’ that went “maaaap - maaap in an ‘excuse me, over here with the hand in the air’ kind of tone, it was a horn to suit a car that always takes its’ hat off in the presence of ladies and certainly when entering a church.
“These alto squeaks from affronted machines” is a phrase to relish; in fact, the whole piece is crowded with wonderfully constructed ‘whats coming next?’ language.
A really delightful and clever piece Ian. I smiled throughout the whole read. Thanks.

I gather that the first mass produced cars, although maybe not on a moving assembly line were made in 1902. well before Ford mass production. ie Rambler, by the Thomas B Jeffrey company' which later used the name Nash. Amalgamated with Hudson to form American Motors Corporation in 1954 and the Rambler name was used again in the 1960's. I have two 1967 Australian assembled Rambler Americans which need restoring. Unfortunately this US based manufacturer of good quality cars, American Motors Corporation ran into financial difficulties in 1989 and was taken over by what seems the Western automotive manufacturer with the worst quality reputation, Chrysler, which has been bailed out twice by the US government. Chrysler apparently wanted to obtain Jeep, which AMC had owned since the 1960's. Now it seems Jeep has a poor reputation for quality control. Remember that for a while Chrysler was part of Daimler Benz until an apparently grubby "divorce" after conflicts of management and engineering cultures. Not surprising that the latter would have given German Mercedes Benz engineers the horrors.
