The extinction of the Extinction Rebellion : Comments

By Everald Compton, published 28/10/2019

So, it is now vital that we get a Constitutional Change made in Australia in 2020 so that Citizens Referendums can get under way from 2021.

'Apparently, it is a big social error to be both young and female.'

No Everald. Ignorant and rude is far more accurate when describing Greta. Then again you to seemed to have taken the Koolaid so your judgement seems severely hampered.

I agree with Mr Compton's opposition to Extinction Rebellion, especially its poor methods of converting the general public to their point of view. While his suggestion of a Citizens Referendum has merit, there is still the traditional method of using a popular movement, as the Australian Republic Movement did in its campaign, which had and still attracts support from many people- of all ages. The Climate Change argument does have solid scientific evidence but lacks the organisation of the latter- you need both to succeed.

The Climate Change activists would be better showing the POSITIVE benefits of improving our country and planet, rather than the scenario of death and disaster; while there is many examples- the Amazon being the largest and most obvious- the Climate Change activists need to have a plan of how to attain their goal of ecological sustainability. Simple slogans and chanting in our cities [and around the world] will achieve very little while the people in power work hand in glove with the industrialists and capitalists. We must show 'what if there was sufficient water flowing in our rivers'; what benefits would there be. Dead fish don't give us any answers.

The answer lies in using our democracy to our advantage- in numbers- millions, not thousands- to obtain legislative change. The way forward is to convince sufficient citizens to push for Climate CHANGE.

A "Referendum on Climate Change" is an inappropriate vehicle

because it would need to address highly technical options on climate change goals and ever changing energy production (renewable and baseload) mixes.

And the Extinction Rebellion, face paint and all, doesn't quite address any solutions to climate change

which are all about unsexy scientific parameters and network engineering problems.

The Extinction Rebellion kids might need to look at ways THEY could reduce carbon emissions by: never owning CARS; never having KIDS; and never taking JETS to far away places.

In the next Federal election all of these kids who are currently not enrolled, will actually be voting and we might find that the major parties will have to actually do something to mitigate against climate change. You wont need a referendum. The young citizens will be calling the tune.
