Towns die, cities choke, Australia sleeps : Comments

By Everald Compton, published 14/8/2019

We will acknowledge that the world of 1901, when Australia was founded, no longer exists and Australians are now very different.

Yes Alan B energy is the key to the problems you describe.
Transport both of people and product must not be a significant overhead.
Fast enough trains would be a lot cheaper than the VFT.
They also would use the same upgraded right of way as freight trains.
Aircraft for long distance travel is cheaper than cars. Trains more expensive ?
Build the dams and fill the rivers and we will grow cheap food which
can feed China, if they do not already own the land.
If we do that we will have them needing us, not the other way around.

We will have to make it clear that Tianxia is not an attitude we accept.
That political policy these days s long out of date.
Australia IS a sovereign country, no metter what Pres Xi says.

We just have to shove the mad trendies aside that are literally
holding us back. If we do not the larger towns will become small towns.

You missed the point entirely this time Alan. A VFT whistling through a small dying town will do nothing but stir up the dust. Then you have the ridiculous expense of VFTs catering to capitals dragging even more money from the country to cover city costs.

You can't run freight trains on the same lines as VFTs without catastrophe. The cost of VFT rolling stock makes them ridiculous for freight work, so you would need 2 rail systems.

The only way you will get people back on trains is to take their private cars, & commercial aircraft off them. Personally I don't want to live in such a controlled society. Like windmills, they are last century technology & becoming history.

When a 10 mile trip to town in a horse & sulky was an all day effort, you needed small towns about 20 miles apart, & large ones about a days sulky drive, 60 miles apart. With modern fast transport 150 miles between towns is close enough to be farmers supply stops. Unless we find some useful industries that allow more people to earn a good living in the old country towns, they no longer have any purpose, & will die.
