By Don Aitkin, published 8/7/2019

The two words are now used almost interchangeably, which is a pity, and both are used much more frequently than they were fifty years ago.

Empathy is handing over a cheque with the right hand & holding out the left hand for a tax write-off form !

I don't know, David,

Mother Teresa might have lost her belief in any sort of god for the last forty years of her life, yet kept doing, for whatever reasons of her own, 'good', alleviating the suffering and fears of the most oppressed. The residual socialist in me admires her for that.

It's a pity no socialists of today have as much love and genuine empathy for the most powerless people. Maybe they never did have ? But they'll put it on a T-shirt, they're really quite virtuous that way.

"Her Christianity harboured an obsession with suffering and death that influenced her care more than her desire to help ever would. She saw the struggle of those in poverty as admirable, she envied it, she thought it brought them closer to God. She likened their suffering to Christ on the cross and, in the worst years, she encouraged and condoned it; even within her ‘hospitals’ and ‘orphanages’."

Also suggest you read "The Missionary Position" by Christopher Hitchins.
