The Emotional Intelligence of Ken Henry : Comments

By Chris Golis, published 25/2/2019

It is not often that you get a chance to see hubris in action but we in Australia have just seen one of the greatest exhibitions in my lifetime.

Can't say that I have ever heard of “emotional intelligence”, but apparently we have an 'expert’ on it. I often wonder whether some arbitrator dubs certain people as 'experts’ or the 'experts’ award the title to themselves. Google describes the condition as “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically”. That doesn't sound like an academic discipline, and any one of us could lay claim to such an airy fairy ability. But, could Ken Henry, recently disgraced by the bank Royal Commission, have the ability?

No. But 'hubris’, which we all know about, fits the arrogant Kenny very well. It's good to see him sent off to be with his beloved wombats at last; hope he has more luck with them.

While their were instances of corrupt and unethical behaviour from the finance industry so their was many who now claim to be victims after taking a gamble and losing and now crying wolf. Kind of like many in the meetoo movement. I know little about Ken Henry but suspect is sick of the fake news that causes everything to fit a false narrative. Now the Mr upright Shorten wants to rob the banks in order for him to grandstand. After his use of union funds you would think he would just shut up. No he will get the useless media to back his hypocrisy.

I agree that the Henry performance demonstrated hubris. But perhaps there were mitigating circumstances. He was operating in a very unusual environment. Here was a powerful man face to face with another powerful man who had the advantage of absolute authority of position. Henry was in fact reduced to a state of total powerlessness. He could not defend himself or appeal to a higher authority. He could only submit. For him there could be no greater extreme of discomfort. He responded accordingly. I even feel sympathetic.

The description, in italics, of Ken Henry, could easily be levelled at most of the conservative-dominated coalition. And past masters of ego-driven pompous arrogance!?

[The first symptoms of early dementia!]

At the end of the day, what did the royal commission into banking achieve, prison time for the exposed criminal scum bags currently posturing as diligent customer serving/protecting bank employees and directors!?

Or the termination of their services without any further financial reward or golden handshake!? And give it was initiated by the banks and a kicking and screaming, business as usual coalition!? what was it really!?

Just an unremarkable sanitising whitewash that does very little than the changing of a few deck chairs and a couple of manifestly miscreant misfits sent packing after a severe dressing down?

The government needs to legislate so the smaller players can't be disadvantaged, or swallowed by the larger parasitic entities?

To reintroduce real, not pretend competition into, this space. And also to remove casino banking from savings banks to reserve that problematic model for the merchant banks. IF AT ALL!

Always providing the government legislates to outlaw short selling and securitized mortgage practises. if only to reintroduce responsible probity.

Just to see how genuine Ken Henry is, why doesn't he now advocate for an inquiry into Centrelink & ATO & Bureaucrat travel rorts ? I'm sure they'd pay him more than any of us could ever dream of getting paid.
