Nathaniel Rich in a long tome in the New York Times magazine wrote about how politics subsumed science in the 1980s, it left the door wide open for denier groups such as Heartlands to promote their rubbish very successfully. Nathaniel Rich interviewed numerous people prior to writing his 30,000 word history in a narrative form.

This week I have received two new mega Reports, one from Californian government and the other from the American Meteorological Society. Another Report recently published indicated that sea ice has never been seen to be so low North of Greenland.
Elsewhere global dimming has been discussed.

Those from the denier area say they have science on their side; fair enough, but lets see it. Any references would need to have a "doi" reference to have any value. Earlier, I mentioned mega Reports where 100s of authors and references are provided. I have never seen such mega Reports provided by the denier side.

Suggesting that those who believe in science are some kind of religious sect is a very funny joke, Don. Go back to the history of Nathaniel Rich and it is possible to see denialism has been a politically motivated movement. Climate science has been established almost two hundred years.
