By Geoff Carmody, published 11/7/2018

These average capacity multipliers will also multiply total costs of ensuring reliable power even as $/MWh renewables generation costs fall.

There are many reasons I trend towards the govt (us) taking back control of the utilities, and one is because, unlike when they are privately owned, we, the people have a chance at influencing the govt if we are dissatisfied, unlike the 'buckley's chance', we would have by leaving them in the hands of private entities.
I for one don't care if the public utilities are subsidised.
It's our money anyway.
I have always felt as if I am being threatened when I hear some scumbag politician say things like 'anyway we are paying way too little for our electricity, the price must be higher'.
I can remember the con job they slipped past the majority of fools in this country, when they tried to sell the energy utilities, the arrogant bastards scoffed at the govt saying it was not profitable enough and told them to stick it.
The govt, another bunch of scum, immediately began this, 'the powers too cheap campaign', and within months or a year or so, we were paying extortion prices.
This time the scumbags said OK that's more like it and the network was sold.
Prices still rose after that and here we are today.
I don't see why the public have to prop up private companies, at our expense of course.
I would be much happier if they all went bankrupt and took down the scum with them.
That's not likely to happen any time soon.

Luciferase, I have just finished reading those linked articles you put
up for me. Very interesting and pleasing to see that someone is taking
those problems seriously.
I did not see that they were trying to calculate how much duplication
would be needed around Australia.
No one attempted to cost the megavolt high capacity grid that would be needed.
I think that with current information it would be hard to calculate.
They talked of 6800 GWhr storage, one hell of a lot. Snowy 2.0 ?

However I have drempt up a way it could be done.
You have a computer connected to AEMO which reads the demands and
operates a model just like it was in a real network grid.
It would also be connected to the wx bureau. If the bureau do not have
sunshine readouts then someone in various areas could have it on line
equipment connected & the same with wind.
There are many wx amateurs who would be very enthusiastic providers.
I know people who would enthusiastically design and build such gear.
The m/c would sit there and pretend to divert power around the country
to fill in shortages.
Then, knowing how it performed with real input data the cost to
provide the power hardware could be calculated accurately.

I think "they" will be forced to do that eventually otherwise the
whole thing will become a bottomless pit for money.

You obtusely avoid context. Yes, there is grid-scale PHES, but where does it support 100% renewables? It's task has never been, on any major grid, to provide a base for the delivery of anything within cooee of 100% renewables. Nobody has made a satisfactory case that it can, or should, be done in Australia. Meanwhile better alternatives imminent.

Bazz, you hit the nail on the head with "bottomless pit". Australia will rue the day it set on the path we appear headed.
