Richie Benaud and cricket’s broadcasting life : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 11/4/2015

Cricket is the sport of the talented broadcaster, the forensic examiner who doesn't merely dissect a game as it takes place, but ponders its evolution.

If the Don was our finest batsman; and the averages might support that, then surely the Don of cricket broadcasting; and off the cuff, dead pan dry laconic humor, our second best leggie, and one of the most humble, was Richie Benaud!

Even as others were regressing to how good they'd been, Richie was focused on reporting the game in play; rather than past exploits or self granted glory!

Or bagging the best player on the ground; out of professional jealousy perhaps?

I would have thought there was already far too much of that male bovine manure being shoveled by the ship load in our dressing rooms, to also have to tolerate it from so called broadcasters as well!

And to his credit, I never heard any of the negative put downs from Richie! If he said anything at all, it was helpful, entirely impersonal and analytic.

Like Dickie Bird, implacably fair, an ornament to the game, and one of the finest Gentlemen of the sport!
