Yet to the bestowing of unconstrained sainthood there remains a huge elephant in the room, one mentioned by but a few and emphasised by even fewer.

Re-read the article please. It says it was Whitlam who persuaded Indonesia to invade East Timor in the first place.

There was no 'desertion' nor did Whitlam think there was any 'blood debt' vis-a-vis East Timor, since it was him who asked Indonesia to invade the place in the first place when Indonesia was initially completely not interested in the remote and insignificant half-island.
