Reserving the marine : Comments

By Lisa Singh, published 19/11/2014

In protecting more than 2.3 million square kilometres, Labor delivered by far the largest representative network of marine protected areas in the world.

Climate change and ocean acidification, have one common cause; namely Co2!
The hydrocarbons we import produce four times more of it, litre for litre, than that which we've so cleverly locked away! BRILLIANT! WELL DONE!
We have according to some industry experts, hydro carbon reserves to perhaps rival or eclipse the entire Middle East, to our immediate north! (A euphemism for the Great Barrier Reef.)
And given the sheer number of oil reserve identifying mystery oil slicks, very close to the surface and therefore easily and very cheaply recovered.
Natural gas leaves the wellhead at "subzero temperatures"; and traditional Australian sweet light crude only needs a little "chill filtering"; to make a very superior, black smoke free diesel! The recovered soluble wax, could be refined in an outdated and local refinery, charge with making, import replacing heavy industrial lubricant
Arguably we've been conned by all number of international (Canadian, American etc) activists, into leaving ours in the ground; and all while their parent nations moved mountains to develop their dirtier and far more costly examples!
And the tourists we were told were coming and earn enough income to replace a forgone indigenous oil industry, have stayed away in droves!
With many operators going broke, and many EMPTY resorts left to rot, or already destroyed by cyclones!
As for LAME DUCK President Obama, he is very likely responding politically/domestically to a gormless green movement, who think they know best how to fix things.
One remembers Germany and how Greens with the power of government; almost bankrupted the economic engine of Europe!
And a downright dumb experiment never ever to be repeated!
Simply put, the U.S. President's power to lock up land or economic zones; just doesn't extend past America's own marine economic zone.
We should do what we think is best for us; (and wouldn't that make a very welcome change) and if that also contributes to reduced TOTAL carbon emissions (75%) by us and all who use our indigenous hydrocarbon products, then so much the better!
Now that's what I call change we can all believe in!

Quick note senator Singh. You are just a small town paltry politician with little brains, no vision but a massive ego. You truly do not have a clue!
You and your ilk gave Tasmania the worst unemployment and would reduce Australia to poverty whilst giving yourself massive wages and a pension beyond all reason.
What about you sponsor a bill stopping all public political pensions or better still a tax on them? As Keating cheerfully did to non public servants. You will find that what you have stolen can be retrieved in the future and your pensions will eventually be rescinded when the world falls into Depression.

‘morning Lisa,

There may have been some merit in your article as a valid topic however, you sadly spiked any meaningful debate by turning it into an LNP bashing exercise.

Yes it will appeal to progressives, yes it is a dog whistle and yes you seek to use it as a party political platform. Is that really the extent of your intellect or are you on a quota system for trolling blogs?

Have you ever considered opening up such debates to those outside your self referential network, or will lazy, political, content free, ideological claptrap fulfill you?

Long may Tasmanians keep you in your shadow portfolio, I have implicit trust in the Tassie common sense that put you there.

Come off it love, that is utter twaddle.

Have you ever walked into any of the national parks the Labor idiots gazetted here on QLD? No I thought not. If you had you could not write such a ridiculous bit of bumf.

With all the management of a game of tiddlywinks, with a management plan, they are the nursery for every ferrel pest animal & plant in the country. I'm sure any plan by that dithering bunch of imbecilic academics they have in the marine park authority would be entirely harmless to any problem, but would be capable of generating heaps.

I took the entire board out to the reef one day, & the "chair", an English professor for gods sake, was amazed at how far out the reef was.

She told me we wouldn't be in business long, as the crown of thorns was destroying the reefs around there. With an average of 3 dive instructors in the water every day we had seen just one in 6 months.

The very best thing we could do for the reef would be get all politicians & all greenies the hell away from the thing.

All greenies, academics & Labor politicians should be confined to inner city high rise apartments, their natural habitat anyway, so their hot air does not contaminate real people, or the environment.

Oh & Rhrosty old mate, CO2 can't cause global warming, & ocean acidification. If it gets hotter, the ocean can adsorb less CO2. It will out gas a percentage, so the PH MUST go down.

Well Has old mate, given you've always argued that the world is really getting cooler, therefore the water must absorb more Co2, and consequently the PH has to rise.
As it already has done. But particularly in polar region waters!
Not sure about gassing out,(mine often has lumps in it) at current temps?
I think we need quite a lot more heat for that, or much lower atmospheric pressure.
I'm sure some smart young thing will one day discover, the easiest thing to extract from water is Co2, and just by washing it through a vacuum chamber, and then re-compressing the extracted gas in an adjoining one, where it will likely form into very salable dry ice!
A block of dry ice wrapped in a towel, keeps the esky and the beer opps, chocolate drinks/malted milk/cordial/iced tea/iced coffee cold for days!
Or alternatively, power a model boat or put cork popping fizz into fizzy drinks.
Put some (teaspoon) with water into a used large plastic drink bottle, screw the cap back on, and wait for the big bang! (outside, not on the ouch ouch, I used to sing bass baritone, lap)
Something to amuse the Grandkids or frighten the dickens out of unwanted grazers?
Cheers, Rhrosty.

Rhrosty, under the global warming scenario, the polls are supposed to heat up first & to a greater extent, hence all the hoo-ha when arctic sea ice was diminishing. Notice how that one has gone quiet now it is approaching record levels again.

The same for the south poll, when a chunk or ice the size of Manhattan broke off & floated away. It was the end of the earth as we know it. Total silence now that there is a MILLION square kilometers more sea ice formed down there in the last 4 years.

It could also be why the ship of fools got stuck in non existent ice in the Antarctic. Poor dears, their model told them there was none there, & those twits prefer to believe models than fact.

Actually we can start getting ready for a new increase in cyclonic weather as the polls cool. It is the difference between equatorial heat & polar cold that generates bad weather, not the actual temperature.

Still as I said earlier, even if the scenario still had any legs, it can only claim to do one of the above, it is scientifically impossible for the ocean to heat up, & simultaneously become more acidic, from CO2.

Marine protected areas and marine national parks and no take zones are virtually useless because do not stop or even reduce the flow of sewage and land use nutrient overload pollution being transported by currents within the ocean ecosystems.
Nutrient pollution is proliferating algae.
Algae epiphyte growth and invasive algae has destroyed the majority of the ocean’s seagrass food web nurseries.

More than 30 years of fishing restrictions including introduction of 200 mile offshore economic zones have failed to prevent fish stock devastation, ongoing devastation.

Even when fishing stops or is reduced, most fish populations are not recovering.

Fish are not immune to starvation.

Generally, animals do not breed during food shortage and starvation.

There is no scientific evidence proving overfishing is the cause of world fish depletion, even though over 90 percent of the big fish have already gone, since 1950. http://news.nationalgeographic.com.au/news/2003/05/0515_030515_fishdecline.html

Evidence indicates small fish populations are also generally and seriously devastated.

Ocean ecosystem water quality seems virtually ignored by politicians.

AGW and IPCC science has not measured and assessed photosynthesis-linked warmth in ocean algae plant matter proliferated by unprecedented sewage and land use nutrient overload pollution.

Solar warmth in ocean algae is apparently not being scientifically noticed , even in Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea waters where ice is reported melting more than usual.

Inappropriate ‘solutions’ are wasting time while real causes and impact and solutions, and opportunities are not being addressed.

Senator Lisa Singh, please respond and discuss the above comments here on OLO
