By David Robertson, published 30/9/2014Australia does not have a school system of gated communities and education ghettos, nor is there any evidence that we are moving towards such a system.

I agree with what Hasbeen said, but I have my own points I'd like to add.
This might be a somewhat ignorant comment on my part as I might not fully understand the consequences of what I am suggesting, but I'm going to say it anyway.
I think the government should just end funding entirely to private schools. The government requirement should be to provide an minimal educational standard to all students. If you are wealthy and you want a better education above and beyond the minimal education standard for your child, then you should foot the bill entirely. Why should the government be helping those who can afford it get a better education than those who cannot? Why should the working parents of children in public schools be forced to pay for rich kids to become the top earners in our country?
The part where I think I might be being ignorant is if someone were to say 'so we should only help the people of lower paid jobs such as truck drivers and garbage collectors and traffic controllers and children who grow up into jobs where a good education is not really necessary and not help the children who will grow up to be doctors, lawyers and bankers?
Well people from public schools can become these top earners too, this happens at universities not during primary or secondary schooling.
Thoughts anyone?
