The US doesn't need to annex anything, they call it regime change. Remove the "big bad leader" by bombing them back to stone age, stick in a new friendly dictator and privatise/joint venture all the natural resource assets. Annexation without the nation building. At least Russia will treat the people in the "invaded" territories with respect, not as drone target practice.
So you think Ukraine should just abandoned East Ukraine? Where do you think the hydrocarbon deposits are located? Or where the heavy industries are? So that isn't worth fighting for right? I'm pretty sure East Ukraine wants to stay in Ukraine, but not if the central government shells their cities with artillery and ballistic missiles.
