The rise of the 'precariat' and the decline of living standards : Comments

By John Tomlinson, published 20/8/2014

A moral reason for a basic income is that the wealth of anyone is much more the result of our forebears' endeavours than our own.

So we have our privileged academics coming out in favor of full communistic policies.

I can only suppose they would expect to be compensated for any contribution they had to make, unlike the rest of us.

So many struggling to build a secure future would be expected to supply a secure future to every drop kick in the country.

The only option for many would be to join the dropkicks on the gravy train. We can't even keep the wheels on the current gravy train of our over generous welfare system.

Just how many times do these ridiculous utopian dreams have to prove impossible, & societies founded on them fail, before our thick headed academics can actually assimilate the facts of life.

It really is time to clear the rubbish & the deluded out of these sheltered workshops we call universities.

Sounds like an interesting book with some interesting points.

On a different, but related note, Rana Foroohar writes a very interesting article in the July 21 issue of Time, 'Wall Street's Values are Strangling American Business'.

The rise of the precariat and decline of living standards are not going to be solved anytime soon. Neither the conservatives nor the progressives have the political will, or courage, to make necessary changes.
