Who needs Russia? Ukraine will destroy itself with new gas tax : Comments

By James Stafford, published 13/8/2014

It is the next phase in the battle among energy oligarchs to secure their interests in the dynamic political arena shaping up after the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych.

Sorry James, can't agree!
We also had to endure this risible rubbish, when we finally asked the gas and oil industry to pay a reasonable resource rent tax?
The 4 trillion dollar PA oil/gas industry has had it too good for far too long!
And someone has to pay Putin's new price hikes. Perhaps he could ask the former Ukraine President, who has patently salted away tens of billions!?
If I were running the Ukraine, real tax breaks would be given to those who develop sustainable alternatives, like the biogas that in combination with ceramic fuel cells, could power all Ukraine's domestic energy needs, and indeed, even earn a small profit; if food waste and scraps, were added to the waste products that supply this endlessly available, cheapest possible gas/endless free domestic hot water!
Super silent ceramic fuel cell refits in established buildings, are clearly the best option, with their world beating 80% energy coefficient!
And yes, they can use locally available NG as well!
And if price gouging private operators won't come to the party, then any amount of cash strapped private contractors will.
But particularly, if Europe and other interested parties, keen to also throw off the Russian yoke, supply some or all of the requisite funding/foreign aid!?
If they cannot produce enough biological waste, lol, then they can resort to Putin's promises, which should be at least good as biological fuel, for the next century, there's just so much of it!
Yes it's a bit late, but the Ukraine needs to press ahead with her own energy supplies.
But not at the expense of reasonable tax, or at the behest of professional, multinational tax avoiders, some of who have annual budgets bigger than many sovereign nations!
And so sad that they are so poor and can't afford to finally pay a fair tax! There there, poor little ickille diddums!

But Rhrosty

I feel Mr Stafford is saying the Ukrainian leadership epitomises all the inefficiency, rustyness, drunkeness, missed opportunities and authoritarianism that is endemic in its neighbour Russia.

Ukraine however is not blessed with Russia's post-Cold War windfall - huge reserves of oil and gas. Russian National Anthem (Hell March) http://youtu.be/AoHZuMDNTkA

Ukraine is like a Cossack rapper up the Volga without a paddle. Here's Ukraine's National Anthem http://youtu.be/dIV-QdPEx-Q

Yes Pete and fully agree!
But let's lay the responsibility where it lays?
At the feet of previous Ukrainian administrations, but particularly the recently deposed President, who reportedly stole and stashed billions of public money?
Money that could have been employed in the former Ukraine Crimea, to develop the considerable gas and oil reserves there; or the recently discovered, huge reserves of shale oil and gas in both east and west Ukraine!
I mean and let's not be naive, Putin's interest in eastern Ukraine only blossomed with its unconventional oil and gas discoveries?
Any of which would have allowed a much poorer Ukraine to finally get out from under the Russian thumb/dictatorial homophobic Putin. (Something else he has in common with Mr Hitler.)
Even Russian speaking Eastern Ukrainians have little or no time for Putin, or the very stage managed display he is patently orchestrating there!
And if push came to shove, would fight against him!
And I think if we and the rest of the world is forced into a war, to protect Middle East minorities from medieval mass murders!
Then we might as well go to bat for the Ukraine, but particularly now, that they have so much potential oil and gas wealth!
And given what is transpiring in the Middle East, use a tactical nuclear weapon there, against Isil in a largely uninhabited western Iraqi desert; and before they can recruit a civilian human shield to cower behind?
If only to say to president Putin, thus far and no further!
We're are prepared to risk all/use any weapon in our arsenal, for the sake of universal freedom/limit allied casualties.
And something sure to refocus the minds of ordinary better informed Russians, who might do the west a huge favor, and vote this sabre rattling, war mongering brute out at the very next opportunity; and preferably before he can initiate WW111.
I mean, if he can successfully annex all or a significant part of the Ukraine, and its considerable if still undeveloped wealth, who's next?

Poroshenko had three options: side too much with the Russians and alienate the Americans, side too much with the Americans and alienate the Russians, or try to find a position that could be acceptable to both powers fighting to influence the future fate of Ukraine. If I understood the article properly, Poroshenko seems to have found a fourth option: alienate both. Poor Ukrainians.
