Its not only the petrol/diesel and electricity consumed in running the World Cup and the related TV transmissions and cups of tea, it is the huge amount of embodied energy in constructing the new stadiums: greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacture of steel and concrete are massive.

However, there would be some offset in that all the visiting spectators in Brazil would not be at home running their lighting, heaters or electric kettles, or driving around.

The calculation is just arithmetic. Find out what the whole shebang costs and convert to price parity-adjusted international dollars (year 2000). Divide that number by 160 and you have the number of gigajoules of primary energy involved. It's rough, and not all that easy (because of the large number of components), but as good an estimate as most.

If I knew the answer to that, I could tell you how long a piece of string is?
Or how much energy the commonwealth games will consume or the cricket cup, or the football finals.
We do need to be actively looking for better cheaper and far more sustainable energy options!
Sadly for the whole of humankind, it can only be the most expensive and part time options, as allowed by the ultra controlling anti-nuclear green movement, who as always, show absolutely no respect for mandates, or the expressed will of the people/majority decisions!?

More interesting is trying to understand how all these people can be entertained by a bit of theater where a couple of dozen actors run round & round in circles, doing practically nothing useful, in between occasionally taking a dive, & pretending someone tripped them.

It is not even good theater, & just so predictable.

Of course it is enormously difficult to make assumptions about how much energy an event like this might use.

But one thing that apparently has not been taken into account in this article is all the energy that would have been used anyway, by all those involved in any way with the World Cup.

I would think that if this could be reasonably accurately factored in, then the net extra energy consumption occurring as a result of the World Cup would be but a small fraction of the total energy expenditure that will be attributable to this event.

Come on, analyse further, project forward to the end of the Century. Encourage a Sport that is International, encourage physical activity, replace other activities, the full life cycle energy cost is probably negative.

Sport instead of conflict, big energy save; health instead of playing on computers or masturbating, big energy save and sport slightly reducing the hot air of the Parasite Classes, big energy save.

I've only seen the Brazilian rioters on TV,; have far more interesting things to do than watch people kicking a ball around.
If I want to watch soccer I can see a game on the weekend at the local oval.
