Innovation is at the core of Australia's future prosperity, and Western Australia is as well placed as any part of Australia to capture its benefits.

Western Australia also produced the Moodle education software, used at universities and schools around the world. Moodle HQ is still in a modest office in Perth (which I visited a few months ago). Martin Dougiamas, creator of Moodle, is a legend in the world's e-learning community for his contribution to the field. However, he is hardly acknowledged in Australia for his work in fostering a new education industry. You can get an Order of Australia for digging stuff up, but little acknowledgement for revolutionising education: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Dougiamas

Apart from that there is some interesting work on innovation taking place in Perth, at and around University of Western Australia (UWA). The Echo360 lecture recording product was originally developed at UWA in Perth and then commercialized: http://blog.highereducationwhisperer.com/2013/09/use-of-video-capture-at-universities.html

UWA's Pilbara Project is to set up an office in north Western Australia, with research and teaching facilities: http://www.news.uwa.edu.au/201212065328/events/feasibility-study-explore-uwa-pilbara-potential

The project office is next door to the Spacecube Co-working space, and UWA looking at the design of such shared offices for their Pilbara facility: http://blog.tomw.net.au/2013/09/co-working-in-perth.html
