The elephant in this room appears to be that we do not have 100% full employment.
We haven't had full employment for decades -despite enumerable successive govs making it “our no. 1 priority”- we don't have it now and there's very little likelihood of ever seeing it in the future.
After all, isn't that precisely what technology and labour saving devices are about? The drudgery of labour was something that was supposed to end in an achievable utopian future.
If we sensibly accept the inevitable that we will always have a significant proportion of the population un/underemployed, (and here we need to count everyone from age 18 to 100+) which age sector should it be?
Realistically, we have no choice but to find alternatives to paid labour as a means of unburdening taxpayers. We have the technology now to make “retirement villages” both energy independent and largely self-sufficient. We could go further and make such villages cottage industry and craft hubs, offering both passive and active incomes for minimal labour.
This is what I have been working on with naked hydroponics.
BTW Ojnab, euthanasia is a good idea for people approaching a vegetative state, or terminally ill and in great pain.
I'm not sure it's a great solution for over 50's unemployment.

Why not mention the Greens' demand for death taxes too? Hey, no need to waste $$ on aged people that could go to illegal migrants instead - get rid of that expensive palliative care and residential aged care too.

Euthanasia for the stupid & hangers-on should be looked at also.

Individual I am not quite sure who the stupid & hangers on are, perhaps we are all in that category, when I look at the world in general Euthanasia may be the best bet for all,
Example: $2 million to a drug dealer.

Euthanasia might not be the drug of choice for all of the six million boomers.

The policy drug of choice by the Government appears to be to just keep moving the pension age up and up.

How about making the employment of the over-50's EXEMPT from Award pay rates and conditions - and leaving such determination to direct negotiation between employer and prospective (over-50's) employee?
Could have a back-lash on employment opportunities for younger workers and job-seekers, but this can only be balanced, in any event, by more job creation, more business, more industry - for all.

Then, what about reducing the overall welfare budget by finding a job for every able-bodied unemployed person (and providing more childcare for 8-year-olds and older, to allow more mums to take advantage of job opportunities)? Again, more job creation.

And, income tax rates could be increased for younger workers - perhaps on a sliding scale by age-group? Harsh, certainly, but may this not also be necessary, in the end result, to 'balance' the budget?

Of course, we could also increase skilled immigration in the 25-40 years-of-age bracket - but this may not be a highly-preferred option, and we would still need more jobs in any event.

No easy single solution, but perhaps a range of modest 'tweaking' (and much job creation) could reduce an impending 'storm' to mere tea-cup proportions.

(And, maybe pollies ought be subject to the same conditions as 'ordinary' folk - with no fancy retirement/resignation/leaving-office perks, and no pension until they reach the normal 'retirement' age.)
