Reading in parallel worlds : Comments

By Tony Smith, published 15/1/2014

Learning Italian – or any language – with parallel texts is possible for individuals, but like saving water by showering with a friend, it is especially enjoyable when done in pairs.

At last an article that looks at the new era of an aging population positively instead of one foreboding economic collapse of the economy and the worrying about whether super will be adequate to finance the material filled life style they have been used to.

It's time for the aged to reap the benefits of the new world,to stop listening to current doomsayers stuck in the old one that technology and science have given the flip. We meed more articles like this one.

We, the aged, have been condemned to live in interesting times, lets enjoy them.

I’m glad Tony is enjoying learning Italian, and wish him well in his later years. But why he prefaced his comments with claptrap about the evils of capitalism is not entirely clear. The reason that the aged are only considered a burden in capitalist societies is that, in other societies, a much smaller proportion of people actually reach old age. In pre-capitalist societies the chances of both he and his wife surviving into old age, and having the opportunity to learn a language together, would have been very small indeed.
