Insomnia eh?

Well Valerie….. if you have a diet of low GI foods: Glycaemic Index that is: such as fruit, vegies, whole grains, as well as lean meat…. taken in relatively small doses – 5 or 6 small meals a day, you’ll keep your blood sugar and energy levels even. And if you don’t stress out or worry about anything major, don’t smoke and don’t drink too much, and be frugal with caffeine and sugar (high GI), and exercise well, you won’t suffer from insomnia.

And then you won’t need to read any of those terrible books!!

Oh…. there is one on the list which is not terrible. It is exactly the opposite. No 13.

So yeah, if you do continue to suffer from insomnia, read that one, over and over if necessary… because it is of vital importance.

You never know with books.

I carried a book, "The Ant World" around on the boat with me for about 18 months with out opening it. Then on a passage from Mooloolaba to Sydney I had nothing on board I could bear to read again, so started reading it.

I did not put it down, apart for navigation chores, until finished. It was fascinating.

My only comment on this list is that I always find it sad to be reminded of how much women read of men's writing, yet the converse is not only unheard of but downright unthinkable.

Out of a list of 25 books on this list, only 4 are written by women and one of those is by the author herself. I find this sad because so much of women’s inner lives – philosophies, narratives, values, concepts – are still so heavily dictated by men’s perspectives and experiences of the world.

Gee Luddy, it was 1976 or there about, how good a memory do you think an old fart has?

It was written by an entomologist, but not all his own work. It was a study of about 15 types of ants, their different social structures, nesting techniques & foods. It ranged from army ants to leafcutters to some very small types that have basically moved in with us.

I had always thought that an ant was an ant, some larger, & some with a bigger bite, but basically the same. This told me otherwise, & made me wonder how they studies some of them.

There was a convention with cruising yachts & book swaps. Long ocean passages can get boring, so we would swap books we had read whenever we met another boat. You wrote in the fly leaf the yacht you got it from, & where the swap occurred. That book was on it's third circumnavigation of the world when I got it
