By Reg Little, published 5/11/2013Anyone who has travelled several times on China's Very Fast Trains at over 300 kilometres an hour is likely to begin to wonder why a country like Australia is not similarly equipped.

There is more however, the author is locked in the business as usual syndrome.
It will not be possible to build the VFT in Australia until the demise
of the airlines.
However the cost of energy that will bring about that change may well
rule out any chance of financing the VFT as well.
China well understands the energy problem which is why over the last
10 or 15 years they have been running around the world buying up all
the oil fields they could lay hands on.
Much more sense for us is the "Fast Enough" project, affordable now
while we have enough finance.
On computers, I don't think any marginal increase in speed will have
any significant effect on anyone's economy and is a bit like the
America's Cup races, a chest thumping ego trip.
There are no real problems that will need solutions 150 msec sooner.
