Even though an investigation verified that Mauchly had stolen the basic ideas for the digital computer from Atanasoff he won the public relations battle.

My understanding of events was at the end of the war some of the
Colossus team went to Manchester University and then onto Leo
Computers (Lyon's Electronic Office) to build the first commercial
business computer the LEO I for Joe Lyons owner of Lyon's Corner Tea Shops.

Others, perhaps including Turing, went to the Farnborough research
project and developed the ACE 1. This machine used the mercury delay
lines as memory which were originally developed for early radar.

All at the same time, Ferranti was developing and selling their machines.
Basically the US came late.
