The demography of employment: the commute : Comments

By Ross Elliott, published 3/6/2013

Public policy and urban planning have become preoccupied with where we live, and with types of housing choice and form, not with where we work.

The only way my students noticed the difference was that I left a note for them. The teaching carried on as usual on-line:
Tomw,
that's scary. Albert Einstein & Prof Gabor actually predicted that scenario. I was hoping it wouldn't happen in my lifetime.

tomw that's fine for pen pushers, & perhaps teachers. There are a few of them around here who's absence would be an advantage, permanently.

However it does not work in industry where people actually have to do things, often with a number combining their expertise.

I had to give up doing business with a boat/ship building company when they gave in to union demands for a 9 day fortnight. I had 3 vessels built by them, with some relatively new technology. With development problems, much of this stuff required up to 5 specialists areas to sort out.

With some staff off every Monday & Friday it could take days before all the necessary people could be assembled to work through a possible solution. If they had to attend the boat concerned as a group, that could take weeks.

They near went broke, & had to endure a 3 month strike to get rid of the 9 day fortnight, & back into business.

Teleconferencing is going to have to dramatically improve to overcome these problems, & still may not be good enough.

My Daughter had to leave a highly regarded university when after 6 weeks of trying, she could not contact a math tutor, or have one contact her. Perhaps some teaching staff should spend more time in their office, or at least place of employment, when not actually giving lectures.
