After reading this twice, I am convinced that, despite all the florid verbage, the writer actually has little to say, apart from presenting an unargued, unsupported opinion in support of the "do nothing" case.

The author proposes nothing to address the problem which is at the heart of Australian journalism, which is that the Press Council is a useless, toothless sham; a tool of the magnates and consequently its Code of Ethics is worse than useless. It enjoys neither the respect of neither the editors nor the public. So-called newspapers invent their own facts and publish nonsense and bias with impunity, yet this author has nothing to offer.

I have little time for Conroy or his current tactics of bluster, but at least he has something right:
Journalism in this country, especially print journalism, is busted, just as surely as its British counterpart which lies in ruins and is currently being ripped apart in the courts and re-regulated by politicians, conservative and otherwise. Since the proprietors are clearly unwilling to respect their code of ethics, legislative change must provide the code with teeth.

Doing nothing is not an option. The patient is incapable of fixing itself. This article was a waste of space.
