Australia's diplomatic network needs to be strengthened, empowered and expanded so that it can deliver better economic, social and environmental outcomes for Australia and its citizens. Senator Bob Carr is currently reviewing the recommendations from the Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee which tabled a report on Australia's diplomatic deficit and how to close it.

The May Budget will reveal the level of support Australian diplomacy will receive in the future.

< Bluff and counter bluff, it helps to be a poker player when doing business or representing Australia overseas in certain countries. >

< Mostly greasing palms will guide the way out of whatever maize they have wandered or been drawn into. >

Careful there Bruce.

Sounds to me as though you are encouraging our foreign minister to act in a less than proper manner.

Bluff and counter bluff? But isn’t bluffing tantamount to lying or behaving in a less than honest manner? Isn’t your desired poker strategy fraught with dangers? Isn’t this gambling with peoples’ lives or freedoms? Couldn’t any bluff go terribly wrong?

Wouldn’t it be a case that once the party with whom you are trying to communicate loses confidence that you are being honest and are basically willing to say or do whatever it takes to achieve an outcome, then you are really in deep poo?

I would say that if Bob Carr is making lots of proper presentations to the Dubai authorities, then he is doing the right thing… and that he should definitely not delve into the murky world of diplomatic poker-playing.

Bob Carr was a hopeless state premier and left NSW a basket case. Now he is proving to be a hopeless Foreign Minister.

Yes DIS, a blundering buffoon of the highest order. I presume specifically chosen by Julia as no thinking person could ever consider him competent, & thus he presents no threat to her leadership. She does have enough to worry about, after all.

Thank god I have never been greedy enough to be tempted to do business in somewhere like Dubai, the rest of the middle east, or our near east.

A lot of things about Oz might stink, but you are not likely to be locked up for being too successful, when bidding against the wrong people.

Everything Bob says always sounds reasonable because he always presents as a Preamble it takes a long time to present this way so everybody nods off to awake when the Deciples cheer on que.

So Bob’s a goon is he?

Haz, DIS and Garum, do you think KRudd or Stephen Smith did a better job?

Or who else would you like to see in the position?

And what difference would it make with the matter in Dubai?
