It is interesting to compare the downfall of Scullin with that of Whitlam, as both were brought down by supply. With Whitlam the Senate simply deferred supply, as it cannot amend a supply bill; With Scullin the attack came from the House of Representatives, where a motion was passed reducing the first item in the supply bill by one pound. The attack came from Lang Labor, with Jack saying to Scullin: "if you dismiss me, I will dismiss you".

Voters should learn from history and not Julia Gillard have to suffer the same fate as Joseph Lyons. Irrespective of the outcome of the upcoming federal election, Australian history may one day acknowledge the achievements of the Gillard government rather than focus on some her human frailties.
