By Binoy Kampmark, published 21/11/2012

Social media can be used by the powerful against the powerless.

Mr Kampmark seems to be one of those people who accuses everyone else of being biased and of failing to understand the true position when, in fact, it is he who is deeply biased.

Israel has every right to retaliate against rockets fired from the Gaza Strip and only a tiny fringe of Hamas apologists say otherwise. As for the "assassination" the man killed was a soldier and head of the organisation firing the rockets - a legitimate target.

Mr Kampmark would be better employed urging Hamas to stop its fight and come to an accommodation with Israel, as the best way to help the Palestinian people.

The powerful have always been able to control/mould public opinion via the traditional media, with virtual impunity!
Nazi war criminal and propagandist Gobbels a classic example, and it seems, not too dissimilar from the seemingly calloused Jewish activists?
However, govts, even the most powerful, have always been a bit slow with their uptake/control of new media!
The Vietnam war played uncensored nightly on our news gathering and puissant TV's, did more to end the war than almost anything else.
It took time, but the right of correspondents to accurately report in war zones, has since been seriously curtailed.
[Apparently, Charlie only needed to watch CNS's nightly news cast, to remain fully informed of the Allies positions/strength and likely forward planning!]
However, not so with social media, which is still largely in the hands of ordinary citizens, the like of who reported the Iranian atrocities, and indeed, it would seem, those in Gaza, with the temerity, to gather and pass on, undeniable visual images of actual Hamas atrocities!?
Rather than the endlessly recycled images, posted by both sides of every recent conflict or "social" unrest, simply to win popular if entirely misplaced public support, and or, the FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES/SUPPORT, that then creates?
It is a Pandora's box and it has been opened.
Controlling what emerges, is likely beyond the "ACTUAL" control of any govt?
The story and action may well be, if you can,t beat it, join and use it!?

The IDF is not using social media to "glorify death" nor is it attempting to portray itself as a "sexy killing machine". If you would like to see the Palestinian Authority's use of social media to glorify death and promote genocide, see www.palwatch.org. On the contrary. In the past when there was no mainstream access to real time footage, Israel's enemies would distort and lie about Israel's actions. The IDF uses social media to present facts which are often "conveniently left out" of discussions and reporting on this complex situation, in an attempt to bring balance and allow users to make up their own minds about what is happening. Israel is NOT the one targeting civilians. However Israel will not stand by and allow the terrorist organisation Hamas to continue it's barrage of 13,000 rockets that have hit Southern Israel in the past 13 years, over 700 rockets this year alone and well over 120 rockets since Sunday. The IDF protects its citizens by attempting to bring down the terrorist infrastructure that actively attempts to destroy it. You would expect no less of the Government of Australia, America or any country that values the lives of its people. This does not make it an aggressor or blood thirsty, it makes it a responsible and admirable protector of its civilian population (in contrast to Hamas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwtRd3ZCNB).

Curmudgeon says "Israel has every right to retaliate against rockets fired from the Gaza Strip and only a tiny fringe of Hamas apologists say otherwise. As for the "assassination" the man killed was a soldier and head of the organisation firing the rockets - a legitimate target."

Do the Palestinians also have the right to self defence against the endless air strikes and seemingly random shooting of its citizens by the IDF? Or does self defence only apply to Israeli's?

As far as being legitimate military targets go, Israel killed 1500 civilians in Lebanon in 2009 because Hizbollah attacked a hand full of Israeli soldiers. Were they legitimate military targets or again are only Palestinians and Lebanese legitimate military targets?

The alleged trigger for the recent violence was an attack on a jeep full of soldiers patrolling the Gaza border. Are they not legitimate military targets?
That attack in turn was in retaliation for the killing of a thirteen year old Palestinian boy playing soccer and a mentally ill man who approached the border and was shot to death by the IDF. I suppose they must be military targets too.

Kampmark makes an excellent point, but not only "can" social media be used by those in power against those out of it, it's virtually a one way interaction, known as hegemony. Even the radical manipulators, like getup, make me want to puke the way they dumb down the issues into nice, easy-to-digest outrages that all politically correct drones can sympathise with without thinking. The problems in Israel doesn't really interest me since the Palestinians lost Edward Said as their defender, but the way social media is now used by interested parties as a barometer does. OLO is case in point, always running its puerile polls among its flock; as if its findings weren't hopelessly stilted and predictable, like the commentary (and the articles!), or they had anything helpful or even interesting to say--except of course to the political parties that hang on every cliche (oh God you're a dreary lot! Barring a few witty exceptions)
Social media sucks.
It's the final languorous capitulation, the political avatar sucking on a straw.

Israel’s Shortsighted Assassination

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/17/opinion/israels-shortsighted-assassination.html

Passing messages between the two sides,I was able to learn firsthand that Mr. Jabari wasn’t just interested in a long-term cease-fire;

he was also the person responsible for enforcing previous cease-fire understandings brokered by the Egyptian intelligence agency.

Mr. Jabari enforced those cease-fires
only after confirming that Israel was prepared to stop its attacks on Gaza.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/17/opinion/israels-shortsighted-assassination.html

On the morning that he was killed, Mr. Jabari received a draft proposal for an extended cease-fire with Israel, including mechanisms that would verify intentions and ensure compliance.

this draft was agreed upon by me
and Hamas’s deputy foreign minister, Mr. Hamad, when we met last week in Egypt.

The goal was!..
to move beyond the patterns of the past.
we now know its just classic redirection

I disagree with the claim that the anti-war protesters in Israel represent a minority. Look how tight the camera is on this "rent a ruckus" pro-war crowd, a tactic media use to conceal the size of the crowd when it is too small.

This feels like a staged event to support Netanyahu. But their expressed sentiments open a window into the mindset of Netanyahu and his followers.

During and immediately after the short lived Green Revolution in Iran the authorities used the mobile phone and computer activated social media postings of the protestors to track them down and then to round them up and thus monster them.

I also read somewhere that both the authorities and right-wing nationalist groups in both Russia and former Soviet controlled areas of the world use social media to track down and terminate members of "dissident" groups.

Welcome to the future because whether one uses uses social or not all mobile phones are now effectively tracking devices. The moment you turn your phone on you are broadcasting your geographical location to ther entire world.

Meanwhile of course the US government was/is building an enormously huge facility which is specfically purposed to keep tabs on ALL such electronic activity, including emails.
