The fifth anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples : Comments

By Les Malezer, published 17/9/2012

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are unquestionably very confused about how the State is addressing implementation of the Declaration.

I have had to delete a number of posts on this article thread. I am getting a bit tired at the tendency of some commenters to play the man and not the ball. Be warned.

...Start again ah Graham: Probably not a bad idea…Firstly I don’t see a problem with a post such as Bullys’ that criticised the authority of the Les Malezer, the author of this article, to represent the broader Aboriginal community face to face in the UN. But you were obviously not prepared to accept Bullys’ criticism on face value. Well, yours is the umpires’ decision in this forum; I don’t personally have a problem with your stand: If we (the posters), don’t like your decision, we need not hang around here.

...More pertinently, my post was prompted by observational evidence over many years, of the unfairness of discrimination in Aboriginal communities themselves, for all sections of the Aboriginal communities to be fairly represented: After all, that was one among the stated reasons for the Howard Government to abandon ATSIC in 2005: Corruption and nepotism were the primary complaints; (the point of my deleted post)! Since I am not acquainted with the “bona-fides” of the author, my post was not directed to him or against him…so I dispute your call!

Graham, it is a pity that so far most of the posts were obviously out of line, and diver is trying to make some link between the article and his issue.

I hope that the limited posts mean that most readers agree with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Signing up to this declaration was a high point for Australia, now it would be good to see some commitment and action on it.

G’day Aka:

...GY was technically correct to delete posts; I don’t think it would be seen as a breach of confidence for me to say that Bullys’ posts, (and succinct criticisms), were directed at the author as (in Bullys’ mind obviously), not being representative of the broader Aboriginal community, particularly I believe in SE Queensland. Did he have inside information? I don’t know!

...My deleted post followed along Bullys’ line (but more broadly), in stating similar sentiments to the “allowed” post above. Yep, Bully and I jointly led ourselves down a corrugated side road.
