Give generational stereotypes the flick : Comments

By Malcolm King, published 13/9/2012

There is no such thing as Generations X and Y. They are not generations. They are small age cohorts devised by marketing researchers.

Er, I thought everyone knew all that already. Generations were given labels by marketers. The arithmetic was never quite right, but then marketers were never that good at arithmetic or they would have chosen another job. People are being born continuously, so they simply cannot be packaged into, say, decadal groups without one segment being 10 years older than another. Ask a 20-year-old what she has in common with a 30-year-old. Most of the time you will get a derisive laugh. But apart from its lack of rigour, does the marketers' rule of thumb really matter? Does it create divisive stereotypes? I think not. Only marketers might fret.

I agree.

It's the same as saying that a "Baby Boomer" born in 1965 has the same Interests , Values and Traditions as a Baby Boomer born in 1946 ( Moi ).

No we don't.

I will start with the big one....Television. I went through all my Primary ( 9 years there.. we had a Prep Year ! ) and most of my 4 years at High School without TV.We had to be home from our friends when the Street Lights came on.

Our Music was completely different.. The start of Rock, The Beatles and Folk Music. The mid 60s onwards were the years of protest and change... late Baby Boomers had none of this.

If there is any generalization do be done.. maybe then in a 10 year cycle may be better... maybe

I find Malcom's article self contradictory. Firstly he acknowledges that people are shaped by experiences, but fails to acknowledge that the experiences of those born in 1950 are different to those born in 1980.

The characteristics of one generation differ from another more in generalities than specifics. That gen y is characterised by say being more fickle and quick to change jobs, does not mean this applies to everyone, only that statistics show that employment times on average are lower, and employees are quite happy to job hop which would have been viewed in a poor light 30 years ago. The statistics don't lie.

Give 'pigeon holing Aussie citizens' the flick, be damned!

We the rich minority ruling class of this backwater mine, er nation, have put decades of work into divide and conquer tactics to subjugate thinking australians with BS media, gerrymandring immigration and overdevelopment without infrastructure except our TOLLways.

The Bankstown fire is just the tip of our intent.

Get used to it losers. This country is ours and if Indonesia can do us a better deal we'll pay for 100,000 boat people to overwhelm your bleeding heart politicians and their undermanned military. Either way Abbott or Yudyhono, we WILL rule.

Trying to stereotype people as this or that generation is about as illuminating as trying to contrast people according to their "star signs". Astoundingly there are many fools who do just that.

PS I forget to mention our #1 divide and conquer tactic:

We offshore all your jobs to save a mint and then degrade you, calling you dole bludgers, when you can't find decent work!

Neat huh!
