I bet there's been a lot more than $100 million a year of public money spent on road and rail links between, say, Melbourne and Adelaide since 1976. If Bass Strait didn't exist, there'd be 500 km of railway and at least as much again of four-lane national highway between Melbourne and northern Tasmania. Accordingly, it's quite reasonable for a TFES to equate to at least the interest-on-capital plus maintenance cost of that sort of infrastructure.

Tasmania is a greenie heaven.

The greens have completely stuffed up any industry, and a large portion of the state income already comes from taxpayer handouts. This comparatively small subsidy allows some Tasmanians to earn a living and postpones the Greens' paradise where the island is completely de populated.
